I love prunes. However, I have been reading negative things about eating them if I seriously want to lose weight. I need to shed 10lbs and am looking for anything suitable for vegans that I can safely eat whilst still trying to shift that 10lbs that doesn't make me feel good.
Any dried fruit is less-than-ideal if you're trying to lose weight because of the large amount of sugar concentrated in a small volume; because they lack the water associated with a piece of fresh fruit, you tend to eat more of them.
Losing weight as a vegan is not easy. I've known several vegans and vegetarians over the years and they've mostly been seriously overweight (I can think of only one exception). One (in his mid-40s) has advanced CVD. The reason is that vegan diets are almost always based around starchy carbs and have an unbalanced (or inadequate) fat profile. It doesn't have to be like that, but it seems to be the default position. Try to base your meals around non-starchy veg - as wide a variety as possible - and add olive oil, coconut oil, or palm oil where possible. This is a lot healthier in general terms, and will give your body a reason to lose some stored bodyfat.
Thank you very much for that. I will steer well clear of dried fruits now. I've been a vegan for 30 + years and only since retiring started to pile on a few too many pounds. I'm not really a foodie so should be able to shift this 10lbs.
Thank you! That is what I plan on doing from now on. We have more fresh fruit on our list now. We do buy frozen fruit as a back up (surely that's OK? David
I eat 5 tinned prunes (the ones tinned in juice, though I don't use the juice) with my breakfast several mornings per week. Clearly they are rather sweet but they haven't hindered my weight loss. Having said that I don't 'snack' on them. I have cut out a lot of sugar from my previously very sugar laden diet but I still like a banana and a few prunes and find I still lose weight. However, if I wasn't losing weight I would cut them out. I think it is best to stick to one's meals and avoid snacking Good luck
Hi Sunny, I retired when I was 58 so a long time now. I've only just started to see the scale creeping up. I am 10lbs overweight. It's not massive or anything as I am quite slim all over besides my tummy. I am just very aware of my appearance. I do have a little arthritis in a few places but walk two miles a day, sometimes 4. I don't snack as such and if I do get a little peckish eat a small bowl of oats with almond milk and seeds.
