Hi Norfolkmummy,
This time last year I had high blood sugar level and cholesterol and was put on statins. I’ve since read that the high cholesterol is trying to combat the damage done by the sugar so taking the statins is the wrong approach. Since last July I’ve tried to eliminate as much sugar (and carbs such as rice, potatoes, bread) so as not to have sugar in my bloodstream. I also read up about insulin resistance which seems to be part of the same pattern of ill health. Everything has steered me towards eating plenty of healthy fats (butter, cream, eggs, cheese, coconut oil), and going low on the carbs (no bagels or baked potatoes!) to reduce sugar in the bloodstream. Counterintuitive from all previous attempts to lose weight but it appears to be working well. I’m now waiting for a new set of blood tests hoping for a vast improvement.
Are you still on medication?
Gary
No. I’d been on low-fat diet for years with no improvement on lowering cholesterol which is why I was prescribed statins. After I’d lost a fair amount of weight by changing to low carb high fat, I decided myself to stop taking the statins (approx 3 months ago), so that It would be possible to get a test done without their influence. I watched another video this morning that came to the same conclusion - sugar damages arteries, cholesterol raises to repair the damage, repairs cause the thickening, therefore solution is not to take statin to lower the cholesterol, but to go low carb to reduce the need for cholesterol. I’m no scientist or expert, but this looked pretty convincing to me:

I'm back on them ,took myself off them for a while .last reading was 8:5 .I asked the doctor if I lose weight and excercise would he look at my BP medication they said they would.
That's my incentive .
Gary
Good luck which ever way you decide to do this. Even if my results when I get them next week have gone back up (they were 6 when prescribed statins, down to 3.5 three months later) I think based on that video I would think that for me, going back on them will not be my first choice
P.s. looking at some of your other posts, this might interest you - I’ve tried to eliminate as much sugar as possible on LCHF, so no added sugar in processed food or carbs that easily turn to sugar, white rice, potatoes, bread, pasta. On the other hand I’m enjoying things I haven’t had in years on previous low fat diet - butter, cream, cheese and plenty of full fat milk from Jersey cows! I’d probably be excommunicated from a WW meeting 🤣 But I am 3st lighter since last July and still losing.
This is interesting! Thanks for sharing. Hope blood results come back as you hope and if you are happy to, please share! X
Hi Norfolkmummy - I phoned for results today and all I got was receptionist telling me “all normal, no action required”. When I said I wanted to discuss with GP whether to continue with statins SHE SAID “well it’s 5.6 so I think you should”. I was too annoyed to to actually ask what her medical qualifications were for giving that advice, I’ve just asked for a printout of result which I’ll collect tomorrow.
You need to know what your hdl level is, that's the protective cholesterol. I had been told I needed to start statins last Aug, I didn't as I do t want to take them, coz of the side effects. I started eating lchf, butter, cream and cheese, olive oil, and cholesterol result last week had stayed same 5.6 total, but my good chesterol had increased, so I wouldn't get too worried about it hun, lchf works
Hi again Norfolkmummy, this is a video that I was directed to last year, that changed my way of thinking. Because I’d been indoctrinated into thinking that the way to lose weight was by going low fat - baked potatoes, bagels, (creating a sugar spike in the bloodstream) it made sense to me as to why I was getting hungry and angry between meals :)) There are plenty of people on this website with good advice about going LCHF
