Hello everyone I hope yous are all well

I'm sorry I've not been around but been suffering with bloated diabetic IBS, sitting g now with hot water bottle trying to ease my aching back and sides (which I'm hoping are effects of stomach problem and nothing new to have to deal with) anyway I was wondering if anyone is on or has done the FODMAP. Being diabetic and having this IBS newly diagnosed I'm struggling to find what I can and can't eat without setting stomach off.

Thank you for reading ❤️

I've seen people refer to it here, JOPAT111 , but it's not something I know about.

I hope you get some useful responses. It's very quiet here today, unfortunately.

If you put FODMAP into the SearchHealthUnlocked box, you'll see some related posts from various forums. Are you on the IBS Forum? healthunlocked.com/theibsne...

Hi JOPAT111

My doctor suggested FODMAP to me 2 weeks ago and after reading up on it, I decided to stick with the low carb high fat or Keto eating plan, I started back on it on 3rd December after a holiday....

Early days as yet, but the FODMAP was so complicated in explaining the 6 difference types of carbohydrates and suggesting which ones to cut down, that I, like many others decided to cut them all down.

Wishing you better days ahead...

Cheering you on 🎉🎉🎉

I have suffered with IBS for some years. I tried FODMAP but found some of the foods really didn’t suit me. Personally I think it is different for everybody. I find it is often different combinations of food that affect me. I can honestly say, since I have cut right back on pasta, rice, potato and bread and started eating full fat, I don’t suffer any where nearly as badly as I did.

So, I agree with Minniwinny, LCHF 😊

Hi JOPAT111

I dont have diabetis or IBS but I have ulcerative colitis. My GP suggested the FODMAP diet. It seemed to calm things a bit but not much. Im a vegitarian and I don't eat wheat, rice, quinoa bread or stuff like that, Im also allergic to tomatoes aubergines and peppers. I figured my diet was restricted enough without adding to it witg a FODMAP list.

What has worked for me is a fairly low carb approach ( less than 100mg a day) I eat a fairly high fat diet, mainly olive oil, linseed oil, full fat coconut yoghurt and cream. I also eat cheese and oily nuts. UC means too high makes me feel very sick.

I don't drink any alcohol at all and I dont touch fizzy or sugary drinks ( that includes fruit juice and smoothies) I don't need any excess gas!

By far the best thing I have done, in regards to my gut health, is the 16/8 fasting. I don't eat from 7 pm to midday the next day ( more than 16 hours but heyho!). I don't know why it works, maybe it gives my gut a rest or something.

My meals are small, tea plate size. I would rather make up my calories with two small meala and two small snacks, like an apple and almond butter or some coconut yoghurt

Im not sure if this could help you.

I find green peppers set me off as well.

Me too, and aubergines!

I suffer with indigestion quite a bit and have decided to eat no food after 7pm which I hope will help.

It's nice to know isn't it that you are far from the only one who has this!

I find the cabbage family of veg sets me off and onions and mustard but I'm fine with eggs, bread and red meat and milk.

Eating smaller meals I find helpful.

Definitely, to know there's a support group that can help answer my questions is invaluable, I find my GP & nurses just seem to fob me off😔 and sometimes the friendly advice given on here can feel like a sympathetic hug. ❤️ I appreciate you all

It's not nice is it when you are sick and need help and you get fobbed off!

Point is they are there to help you when you are ill not criticise you!

The last time the doctor asked me to make an appointment with the dietitian to speak about some diet questions, instead of a appointment to discuss it I got 2 printed pages off the internet that I could have got myself.. Waste of my time😔

I really think if a dr suggests this they should be able to back you up with support JOPAT111 . The low FODMAP diet does help some people with IBS but it involves cutting out a big range of foods at least to begin with ( the idea is you eliminate all the possible triggers then add them back in one at a time to see if they upset you or not) and therefore it's important to make sure you're not missing out on vital nutrients, with you being diabetic that's an extra thing to take into account. I didn't qualify for a dietician appointment apparently they are in short supply and the Drs advice was to "just avoid things that upset you" and some more PPIs. I heard about the FODMAP from a work friend who lives over the border in a different county and did get a very helpful dietician. With a bit of advice from her I eliminated one thing at a time from the list of things I suspected were causing the problem rather than eliminate them all at once, and now I have a list of foods I can't eat at all, and others I can eat occasionally in small quantities and as long as I stick to that I rarely get symptoms. Luckily I don't have a problem with dairy which is often a culprit.

It does work for me, not the way it's supposed to be done, but I felt the way I did it was less drastic than trying to do the whole thing at once unsure if I would miss out on important nutrients. It's still a worry that there are very few green veg I can tolerate, I eat a lot of lettuce and spinach!

Really hoping you can identify problem foods and get your symptoms under control, all best wishes x

Thank you for replying I'm trying to work out and eliminate items like you very little veg on my plate now, I guess there's no quick fix on this

in reply toFran182716

With all due respect avoid things that upset you isn't very helpful from the doctors.

No it wasn't very helpful, I benefitted from my friends dietician advice secondhand!

I second a lot of the suggestions that others have mentioned. I have IBS that has pretty much gone from cutting out all refined food and carbs. I get my carbs from veggies now. I have to keep my carb intake quite low to not have any symptoms but I feel so much better for it. Merry Christmas and I hope you feel better soon :)

Thanks for replying ❤️ I know some veg set me off but going to defiantly going to cut carbs down 😊

in reply toJOPAT111

Stay away from those veg! And really look into the lower carb (higher fat) thing. In my limited experience it does not have to be onerous or super low carb to notice a difference.

Honestly, I have felt so much better! ( ive had a bit of a carb lapse this week and it has served to remind me just how I need to be careful.

in reply toNoMoreJunk

Happy Christmas to you!

in reply toNoMoreJunk

I have noticed a real down turn in my tummy health in the last week.

Ive been slipping carb wise, a mixture of Christmas, laziness, depression and not wanting to eat or cook and a bout of UC and a kidney infection back to back.

All that it took, in my case was a flat bread earlier in the week, a baked potato a couple of days ago and three small mince pies yeterday.

I feel horrid!

If I wasn't a convert to a lower carb life before, then I am now!

I can see that it is not for everyone and I can see the downsides, but for me it has to be the only way.

I am exactly the same - one jacket potato sets me off for a few days, pastry is a no no. I am to a convert and won't look back x

Aww Hun, this time of year I think most of us slip in our diets and I hope you feel better soon, cutting the carbs is defiantly something I'm going to try and do. I hope you have a fantastic Christmas Hun 🎄❤️

I hope you find some comfort @jopat111. Have you tried the Michael Mosley Blood Sugar diet. I have heard good things. I have bought the books and will start it after the stitches heal on my tongue (I had a lump removed last week). Wishing you well.

Oh Hun I hope your tongue heals quickly and your ok❤️ I've got his books and was going to give it a try but unfortunately I would have to play around with my insulin and my sugars are to unpredictable but it seems to have helped many people 😊
