I want to be slim again

Hi. I came across this site while feeling totally depressed. I am 43 year old women. I don't feel I eat that much (but maybe not the right stuff). My height is 5.5 I am almost 13 stone so 3 stone overweight according to my doctor. So it's time to do something about this. The problem is I have a busy stressful job and long hours and when I get in all i want to do is flop in front of the tv. I do however twice a week get time in the morning to excercise but of course I don't. How do you change your hatred of excercise into a love that i seem to hear people around me saying how wonderful it will be. But something is stopping me. I despartely want to lose weight for my health and future. I hope this site will inspire me and get over my fear of excercise.

Hi and welcome, greencolour9 :)

You'll be happy to know that weight loss is more about diet, than exercise, but exercise is good for health and well-being. You need to find a form of exercise that's enjoyable and I believe you can't beat a nice walk. I know that's less appealing at this time of year, but there's something quite exhilarating about braving the elements for a brief, but brisk sortie, then returning to the coziness of home/work :)

Have a look at these, to see if they give you something new to think about

Hello greencolour9.... “hatred in to love”... hmmmmm....I think..by trying to think of anything at all ... anything, that you could do, skipping in the house, hula hoop, work out dvd... even walking up and downstairs ten times... or..... gasp ! join a gym.... I know you’ve said you work long hours and have a very stressful job and very understandably want to flop in front of the tv, but, I truly believe that however little ‘movement’ you do in the gym, you will never walk out of that door feeling worse than when you went in... you get, or I do, and I know others will echo this, other benefits... psychologically, it makes you feel good !!!! Others will tell you the brain reasons why this is so, I’m not up on that, all I know is it’s true... Plus, however long you’re in there, it’s totally absolutely “ your time” your only focus is yourself, and again psychologically for some reason that feels and does good... you don’t have to ‘love’ exercise just not hate it that much that you refuse to do it....it’s not the enemy... when I first started going to the gym... I’d be getting out of the car saying to myself “ I bloody hate this, I don’t want to be here’ and a few other words too... but I did it...and hate can turn into tolerance and that into nearly liking it..... 😉. I wish you lots of luck with this, any time you want to chat I’m here 🙂

hi green you dont need to exercise to loose weight its mainly what you put in your mouth training is good but main factor is food or types of food i would if i were you try the low carb high fat diet dietdoctor.com/low-carb or google it yourself plenty info on the net i use very extreme way fasting during day then small meal at night but you said your job is stressful i think that would be to much for you maybe try weekends if not working try it you will get pangs of hunger what i use is a chunk of cheese chicken also but cheese definitely works for me the two mornings you can use for exercise if the weight around tum aim excercise there there again plenty tips on net for that main thing is will power i use soups mixed veg chicken fish tesco have some vegie type burgers which have different fillings quite nice but i say food is the enemy ok you must eat to exist but eat more than you need and your here asking for help so good luck 3st =3 months hopefully +xmass oh dear

Hi greencolour9 you have come to the right place where you will get so much support and encourgement as you have already seen by the previous responses. Exercise is not for everyone, I dont like bike riding but love walking but it still took me time to get out there. Dont think that you have to suddenly jump around as I think slow and steady and you will win the race. Maybe try walking around the block on the days you can. Take stairs etc. Go to Daily Diary and look at the posts there for ideas on types of food to eat. Join a Weight day here as I found it great for me. You will get some great advice from everyone here and you will find something that suits you. Good luck on your journey to the new you.

Try taking a short walk on those mornings you have time. You may find you enjoy it and make the walks a bit longer.

I can honestly say I was in a similar position 6 months ago, I've been overweight for so long I didn't think I'd ever slim down. Something changed though six months ago and I thought I'd try Couch 2 5k and it was the best thing I've ever done. Along with (really) sensible eating I've lost over 4 stone and with an added bonus that jogging make you feel brilliant. Best of luck and hope you make your target weight

I can fully endorse Rockethockett’s suggestion. I started Couch to 5k a few weeks ago and it’s great. You have a trainer helping you all the way and you can repeat the weeks as many times as you like until you feel ready to move to the next level. I’m 67 and have knee osteoarthritis - despite this my doctor said “go for it!” Try brisk walking instead of running at first, make it suit your needs. But 30 mins exercise 3 times a week is so much cheaper than joining a gym. Food wise I can recommend Davina McCall’s book “5Weeks toSugar Free” and “Sugar Free in a Hurry”. Good luck!

Couch to 5k is amazing. It's 30 mins three times a week and absolutely doable. After 9 weeks you'll be running three 5ks a week. Can you imagine that! I hated the thought of running and yes every run is still maximum effort and gruelling but somehow what everyone says is true - it's addictive and highly enjoyable. As for diet, you are most likely consuming more than your body needs. I advise keeping a food diary for one week with no dieting. After that week, look at what you can and should change realistically. You'll need to cut back on amounts and make some healthier choices. At first this is uncomfortable and you might be hungry but your tummy will adjust and you will lose weight. I advise being very realistic about weight loss. Make small changes with food, take on some exercise and expect small and steady weight loss. My personal aim is half a pound per week. This small amount allows me to still eat a satisfying amount and have treats. As long as I still cut down and make good choices mostly I will still be in a calorie deficit enough for half a pound weight loss. Good luck. You can do it.
