I’m 54 woman feeling fat with 3 stone to lose as have hit 13 stone (still not really sure how this happened). This is 4th day counting calories and so far so good. Resisted delicious looking brownies a colleague brought to the office today.

Well done with your head start.. Please ensure you check the calorie range suggested by the NHS bmi calculator as it is much more generous than some suggest.. and you will lose weight if you eat enough!

Well done on resisting the brownies

You're under way SouthWesterner :)

I'd say join a weigh-in on whichever day suits you; you'll get to know a regular team of people and get great support.

If you want help and ideas on planning your meals and using your calories well, use the Daily Diary where we log our meals for the following day.

If you're following the 12 week plan, you need to be aware that the 1400 figure is generic and likely to be too low for you. Get your own calorie range from the NHS BMI calculator and aim for the upper end of the range; under eating will do you no good.

Take your time following the link Minniewinny has given you, so you can find your way around.

As an extra bit of reading, this might give you some idea why we find it so much harder to shift the weight as we get older healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Hi SouthWesterner this is the best place to be as you will get so much encouragment, support and advice and your weight loss journey. Well done for resisting the brownies. As BridgeGirl suggests go on to the different forums and try to join a weight in day. I find that it helps me. Have a great day:)

Well done SouthWesterner for resisting those brownies .... I find work torturous for all the delicious goodies my lovely colleagues bring in .... I have to remind myself that these treats are definitely one of the reasons I’m overweight ... I have been enjoying them too much over the years 😂 keep up the good work and stay strong 💪

I work in a school and the staff room is a mine field of goodies!!! Hence a stone heavier than this time last year.

Feels good when you resist doesn’t it.

Hi SouthWesterner .... that sounds familiar.... there are lots of us "more mature" ladies on here who hit our fifties and found we'd acquired a mystery couple of stones 😁

You are wise to seek help to deal with this now, I was already in my 60s by the time I tackled my spare stones ( read my profile) . By monitoring my food calories and with the support of all the lovely people on here, I gradually lost my excess and a bit more and am now in my 4th year of maintaining. If I can do it ( and many others too) then so can you. Welcome!!

You sound exactly like me . Aged 58 and only 5 ft 1 my weight crept up to 80kg . I know my clothes were tight and you are curvy from my nice friends wasn't ok. Living close to a major city and getting 40% deals off food popping up on my phone 24/7 didn't help . I was going to tackle this almost like a new job by planning /preparing. I started Jan . Using MyFitnessPal app as strict guide now I don't bother I have lost 17kg . You can do it and loads of help here too.

Hi Southwesterner, I’m the same, I’m 52 and need to lose three stone. I’m a stone heavier than last year at this time. I don’t know how I’ve let myself get like this. I’m going on holiday soon and now panicking I’ve got nothing to wear! I’ve started again this week and so far I’m doing ok. I’ve increased my water intake, (this is definitely helping me to not feel so hungry) I’ve made a conscious effort to make good food choices and I’ve made sure I’m moving about more and walking when I can. I’m hoping when I’m on holiday I can resist temptation and make healthy choices. If I can maintain on holiday and not put on, I will be happy. We’ve both made a good start let’s keep up the good work. We can do this!
