Mother and daughter thing 😊

I need to lose 3 1/2 stones, as does my 12 year old daughter. Her steroids made her balloon, so now we are making a team effort. So first weigh in done, small achievable goals and monthly target treats, really wants us to be fitter and healthier.

Well done to both of you. Will she get involved in the cooking & calorie counting too? And joining the daily diary (which is really beneficial to me as getting a lot of ideas & support there)

Hi and welcome, purplepatsy :)

I hope that your daughter is under the guidance of a GP/dietitian, as the 12 week plan is not for anyone under 18 years of age.

Small achievable goals is definitely the way to go and concentrating on health and fitness is much better than the numbers on the scale :)

This sounds like it will be a good bonding experience for you both. Perhaps try to keep the focus on eating good fresh healthy food and cutting out the junk and sugar, drinking lots of water instead of colas etc to improve the health and well-being of you both. Incorporate some exercise too as this will be good for you both and will set your daughter up for good habits to last a lifetime.

Be careful to keep the focus away from dieting and weight reduction as your daughter is at the impressionable age where eating disorders can begin and I am sure this is the last thing you would want. Good luck and best wishes to you both. X

My daughter gained weight due to her asthma medication, she was very ill for 6 years. She only drinks water, soda water and squash occasionally, but loves cheese! So she is now cooking more and aware of portion size and hidden fats and sugars. As I work shifts, having fixed meal times had been a problem, but I've filled the freezer with home cooked, healthy meals that she can pop in the microwave when I'm on late or nights. We always have fruit, but her older sister does buy lots of biscuits, crisps ect; which I've moved into her room. Getting her moving, walking with me (I do 10000 steps at least daily) will be fun and all our treats are based on her favourite things to do, swimming, visiting animal sanctuaries, going to parks. It will be lots of fun. Thanks for the advice and encouragement. X

You sound like a really caring mum and your children are blessed to have you. I suspect you had a very worrying few years with your daughter’s illness. I hope this is improving now as she gets older...either way exercise will definitely be of benefit to her breathing. Your new healthy lifestyle will benefit your whole family as you will be their role model. Good luck!
