Eat More, Weigh Less?

I was wondering about the many suggestions I have had about eating more calories each day.

I started four days ago to do this.

Today I have gained a pound.

I think I shall go back to what I was doing before because I was doing fine.........and although I understand the physiological reasons which support the premise that we need to eat a certain amount daily, I am not happy to do this myself.

It's a great pity as I enjoyed my bowl of home-made soup yesterday evening.

Can you consider giving it a go for 2 or 3 weeks? A big ask I know but what's the worst than can happen... you can always go back to what you're happy with at the end of it and at least you can be certain you gave it a good go.

I could consider that, of course. I am making the long journey to London in a fortnight, to see my children. I haven't seen them since I was at my heaviest and I don't want to gain another few pounds just before going down there; I have bought new clothes which fit nicely. If I gain more weight I won't be able to wear them.

I can understand that.

But when I return, I am going to have a look at calorie-counting. I am not calorie-counting at the moment - I am eating a little of everything apart from sweets, chocolate, cakes and biscuits. So my diet is healthy.

I have stopped eating whole tubs of ice cream, too. (yum yum)

Having a long period of not eating every day seems to help me. Yesterday evening I broke that habit and had the soup in the evening, with dire results.

I've had a poor week so at the moment feels hypocritical to give out advice :(

Good luck with whatever road you choose to travel.

Awwww Tiggerr..........don't put yourself down. We all have 'poor weeks'. You're not alone in that.

Thank you so much for your support. It means a lot to me. I truly hope your next week is better for you. Don't give up.

The wonderful thing about human beings is that we are all different. I personally have never found that my body goes into "starvation mode". The less I eat, the quicker I lose weight. However, I am now old enough to be moderately sensible and am happy to lose weight gradually. From other peoples experiences, there are obviously people whose bodies do manage to hold onto the calories if they restrict their intake too much. From my reading of the science, there is no way of predicting which group you fall into ahead of time. It is just a try it and see.I would agree with Tiggerr that if you try something different it's best to try it for at least a couple of weeks before you have a good idea whether it's going to work or not. Can't believe the home made soup is the culprit though! I credit my home made soup for most of my weight loss so far. Anyhow, I'm still in awe of your progress Laura97.

Thanks for the reply, Cressid.

I do agree that we have to find something that suits us.

I think I will carry on with what I'm doing.

As I keep saying - it doesn't seem to matter what I eat. It is when I eat it!

But I don't count calories. I go to a social club every week where we eat a lot of home baking. I knew I would have trouble resisting that so I had to decided whether or not to keep going.

I made the right decision. I carried on going to the club, and I walked there and back. On the evenings when I've been to the club I have quite a sparse evening meal.

Good luck on your journey.
