Hi welcome , you have come to the right place for support and advice , have you looked at the 12 week nhs plan , it’s a fab way to start and if you follow it you will be well on your way to your goal . I found the beginning but daunt so made smaller goals , like getting to the first half stone then setting another, every pound I lost I put a pound in a jar and treated myself after a stone and it really do add up . I had a sweet tooth so I made and still do batches of suger free jelly and I love pink lady apples . The main thing that I’m convinced made me lose weight is having breakfast ,I never did and used to snack , I now have oats every day and hardly snack now , if I do it’s usually fruit . Good luck and keep active on here it’s fantastic xx

You're a very active person 56lorraine , all credit to you. However, weight loss/gain is much more about what we eat than exercise, as you're finding.

I think you've identified where the excess pounds have come from. Maybe it's time to widen your diet and enjoy more of the wonderful array of foods that are out there.

Good luck :)

Hi 56lorraine, I am in the same boat as you. I have tried all diets so hoping this one will work. Good luck!

Hi 56Lorraine

You’re doing lots of walking which is great and the best way to start things off. When I lost all my weight (16st-7st9) I started by just making the portions of what I already ate smaller as then I didn’t feel like I was restricting myself or denying myself the food I was so used to. What you’re eating doesn’t seem too bad but try things like having one piece of wholemeal bread from a small loaf with your egg, Also have you tried having a fun sized bag of malteasers? As I know they only have 98cals per bag as opposed to 188 in the big ones, it is less chocolate but it should be enough to give you a sweet fix. I’m a hug fan of hartleys 10 cal Jellies as they are sugar free and really filling + come in really handy pots.

Try not to be too hard on yourself as some weeks you can drops lots of Lbs And others nothing, maybe give yourself another week & if you still haven’t lost anything eating what you are now, then you will know that’s where the issue lies.

Good luck x

Good advice about smaller portion size. That's usually the easiest way to start without denying all the things we love. And start filling the plate with more veg. And if you really want chocolate or wine, then only have a fun size bar or a 125ml glass . As long as overall calories are reduced in line with your new BMI you should still make progress. From my experience you gradually don't miss the bigger portion sizes at all .

You’re so right! Once you start to resize it becomes the norm and your brain doesn’t see it as denial of food anymore. x

Hi there, I know that feeling. I've turned 60 and was two stone overweight so decided that was it. I wanted a healthier future. I'm just 9 weeks into it and have lost 10 1/2 lbs. I feel so much better and loving it. You know yourself what your downfalls are. Keep active . Start the 12 week plan and calorie count to get going. I find I don't need to do the count now as I know what to eat and have meals planned a bit better but don't feel hungry at all. Good luck.

Hi

Toast and butter “might “ not be helping ... bread as far as I read ( that rhymes lol )

Can spike blood sugar more than most sweets can especially white bread .. I have a cereal of oats and banana ... andnhave cut out sugar drastically ... ( can mow the metabolism down as it affects hormones apparently ... i snack in fruit if i need a sweet fix ... and a healthy dinnner of protein veg and carbohydrate ... doc once said to me to have just 2

(Maltesers). And I asked “packets” lol she actually laughed ;0) ... i don’t keep biscuits of cakes in the house and the only reason I’ve resisted choc is because of my Sons immenent wedding ... you will feel a bit fed up but after a week I felt more energy and brighter in myself ... good luck ! There are books about going sugar free ( I have 2 marshmallows a day that hubby gets out a hidey whole for me just to keep me sane )

It won’t be a quick weight loss but it should happen ... basically I suppose what i do is just cut out treats .. and replace with fruit

Hope this sort of helps ;0) ... lots of great advice on here

I've just remembered the brilliant quote someone posted here last week - "you can't outrun a bad diet" :D

Hi 56lorraine .. great advice on here already, just wanted to add that the amount youre walking is awesome and will be having an immense positive effect on your body and long term health, so keep going! It sadly seems to be true that weight loss is far more dependant on what you eat than exercise, BUT the exercise youre doing will be setting you up to keep any weight lost, off, and helping with a whole host of metabolic functions to keep you healthy.. good luck and keep in touch!

Good luck with the radical change in your diet. you mention feeling frumpy, so reward yourself at little goals with non food treats, a new hair cut, a manicure, a spa day, pretty clothes, costume jewelery, a night at the theatre, anything that isn't eidble.

At least your starting point is not too far from your ideal weight; you have done well to minimise the weight gain over the years. Think positive! At 61, my weight hit 15st plus and I managed to lose 3 stones in a year; my main motivation was to get back into horse riding, which I did. My weight has crept back up a little since then as life & its challenges has intervened, but we all have to realise we are in this for the long-term! I now have to get the right mind set to lose those last 2 stone; after all if you can stay healthy, you can have a lot of fun in your 60's & 70's...

I have heard 80% of our weight is down to food and 20% down to exercise . I was exactly the same as you . Not really that bad a diet but the eating out which aged 58 is all my friends seem to do and several All Inclusive hols now my children are Adults . This piled on pounds over a few years . As this is an eating plan for life I would plan meals and portion sizes . If you can't wean off choc straight away then buy treat size and limit to 3 a week which means skip a day . Crisps I have found if I crave I buy baked ones and have instead of any bread or I have after a salad . Buy plenty of herbs / spices as I found bottled sauce - even a blob bumped up my calories . You seem to do well with your walking which is great . Good luck and update us .

You are never too late to get started. I was 67 last summer and way overweight. I was told that although I thought I was fit, my internal organs were starting to suffer. I decided to do something about it and last October I joined ManVFat Football. Apart from the exercise you have to keep a daily diary and note what you eat and control calories and get tips and help from other members of team. It has been a great help and I have now lost nearly 3 stone. I have taken to drinking 2 litres cold water every day which helps and avoiding fizzy drinks and booze! I try to average not more than 1400-1600 cal per day but have the occasional day when I exceed that.

Result, well done! 👍

hi 56lorraine and welcome! you have come to the right place. you will find recipes and suggestions. I understand that exercise is only about 10-20% of weight loss so a new way of life is the way to go. I crave sugar sometimes really bad but found that if I have a fridge full of fruit instead of a cabinet full of chocolate, I eat the fruit and feel good! I know you can do this don't get frustrated just get started! sometimes I get so hungry or at least think I am so hungry that I eat anything and everything. sometimes a craving is the only way to go to satisfy yourself so maybe just a little chocolate and an apple? works for me usually

I know how you feel. It would help if you could cut right back on the chocolate and crisps. Realistically you won't lose weight while you are not eating healthily. I know it is easier said than done.

I'm deeply impressed to see that you walked thirty five miles. I couldn't walk thirty five yards.
