Stop sabotaging! clean out the cupboard and fridge

If you are the sort who is tempted to binge when things don't go to plan or you feel down make sure you don't have anything in the cupboard or fridge which will harm your diet. It is far harder to resist bingeing on crisps, biscuits cakes, etc if they are readily available and in the house. ( I remember once trying to resist chocolate by putting it on a shelf I could not reach - just got a ladder - for just one square - over and over again)

If you are serious about losing weight it starts by not buying and supplying yourself with stuff you know will undo all that good work in dieting all day just to ruin it in a few minutes.

Get rid of all sugar substitutes and diet food which are not good for you and instead have at hand some walnut halves and almonds and take a few of these as your treat. Get rid of diet drinks and fizzy drinks and drink water. Diet drinks and fizzy drinks just make you more hungry.

Absolutely.

Eating properly starts in the shopping basket. I use the following principles too;

If it has an ingredient I can't pronounce, I don't buy it.

If it has ingredients that I don't know what they are, I don't buy it.

If it has more than one ingredient, I generally don't buy it.

If it is sold in a box or packet, I don't buy it.

If it is advertised on TV, I don't buy it.

Cripes! They are some harsh rules!

I do try to eat 'clean'. I don't buy anything with weird pseudo-food ingredients or chemicals, and I try to buy whole foods. But I definitely allow more than one ingredient. I'm not close to the discipline you have Rignold!

I am lucky in that my OH is right there supporting me so he has stopped filling the door of the fridge with nut chocolate and bounty bars and Turkish delight. He does have cream cakes but eats them immediately so no prob there

I see this diet as do or die the prospect of diabetes is a strong motivator to change my eating habits

i agree with everything you are saying and if i lived on my own i could do it.... but with 3 kids all at home over the summer and a husband who loves to snack its not that easy to not have nice things in the house... !

however ...me having a broken leg over the summer is helping me not be tempted as much eat as i cant get to the naughty cupboard to get anything myself haha !

thankyou x

My OH is a crisp and chocolate lover, and one of the forunate few who can take or leave them. But he does like to have them there, and he is entitled to have what he wants in the house. That can be hard! I am trying to slowly edge out all unhealthy junk but it will take me time!

im the cook in the house and usually make everything from scratch.... so at the minute its meals that are easy to make by the kids or oh with my supervision... at the moment because im not able to do much with them i think im over compensating by treating them with more treats in the cupboard to make up for the crappy meals and boring days..😔

once im able to weightbear and everything gets back to normal then things will be better again x

My OH can eat himself silly and never puts an ounce on. He's the same weight now as when we married 46 years ago. He is very supportive though!

I've cut right down on sugar and anything containing hidden sugars in the past couple of months and find I'm feeling much fuller for longer. I'm also cooking almost everything from scratch so I know exactly what I'm eating.

I think that's great because you know what you are eating

I have 3 kids in the house too, but not having any sweet-toothed wife in the way, I just make them eat kale.

No offence taken

Actually kale tossed in a freezer bag with a dash of olive oil and sweet paprika then roasted in the oven is delicious. Like crispy seaweed.

Not even it's tender cousin spinach? Wow you are a tyrant Haha!

You are so right pcrw I don't buy any fizzy drinks or junk food and try to make every meal from fresh products. My snacks if I want one are either fruit or nuts and raisins which I keep weighed out into small pots so I know the calories.

I agree, it's a nightmare to have temptation around so I don't. I agree with fizzy drinks. I gave up Diet Coke in October when I started and when I tasted a bit at Xmas it tasted horrible. Giving up processed food has made the difference to me for the first time in my life.

i used to drink loads of diet coke everyday and used sweeteners in my drinks thinking i was being good.... i gave it up in February and havent had any since after reading how it can affect your health..... i do wonder if this helped my Blood pressure return to normal too !

i never have any fizzy drinks in the house (not even for the kids) and the only time they get to have a coke if we go out as a treat..

Good news

The science tells you it's true. Diet food with sweeteners and thickners don't help at all. You just keep craving sugar,

Well done

I agree with your post about not keeping things at hand that your hand isnt allowed. It is just disastrous for me! I tend to snack on nuts and seeds, which is great but calorific and has hampered my progress. So I will work on not snacking so much. It is a work in progress for me.

Re sweeteners and all that junk, yes I agree they are evil. Sometimes they are a necessary evil though! I will eventually edge them all out but some days all that keeps me from falling over the cliff and giving up is a diet coke, a low fat salad dressing or a 'sugar free' sweet or jelly.

Ultimately the aim for me is weight loss, because all the avocadoes in the world cant keep me alive past 60 if I keep gaining. After that my aim is to eat the absolute best, most nutritionally dense, least harmful fuel I can get my hands on.

If it is a crutch to help you gain control and make a permanent change then I think use it!

I've really enjoyed reading all the above posts. 😊💛💚💛💚

I love your message!!! That it is me all over. I even sleep eat if there in the cupboards. And wake up and realize what happened during the middle of the night. It was a hard habit to break. I finally realize that no more sugar and chips. Still trying to give up diet Pepsi. Keep posting let us know how you are making out.

Glad you liked it. Just back from walking before the heavens opened

Diet Pepsi and coke are addictive. When my Neice was a teenager she was anorexic and used to drink 2 to 3 L of the stuff a day. ( happily she is now better and a qualified doctor expecting a baby which is a lovely outcome)

I read Dr Michael Mosley's book on the blood sugar diet and he says the brain cannot tell the difference between artificial sweeteners and sugar and so the body reacts the same and the craving for sugar continues. It is very worthwhile giving up or artificial sweeteners and especially artificially sweetened fizzy drinks. So glad to hear that you're making progress and your next plan is to dump them Best wishes
