Looking for Support

Hello! I'm a 56 year old lady wanting to loose 10kg. Currently weigh 70.5kg, BMI 28.3. Generally a health diet but downfall is an addiction to chocolate & sugar and emotional eating. If I can overcome these, I will be able to move forward. Hoping to get tips on healthy food to prevent sugar cravings. Also tips on improving activity and weight training and flexibility

Hi and welcome

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI (can be found in the pinned Newbie post) to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's :) and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊

Wishing you all the best on your weight loss journey :)

Hi. I am 58 and also have 10 kg I want to lose (currently 70.4kg). Just signed up yesterday, so in the same boat. Chocolate not such a problem for me but like a glass of wine with my dinner. May have to build that into my calorie allowance ! Dont want to call you Fatty1961 so will call you FutureSkinny1961!

Thanks thats very kind of you! Let me know if there are any tips to help us on our way.

I read somewhere that wine is actually 'liquified sugar'. So since that time I limit myself to one glass. By visualising myself drinking a glass of sugar, it has helped me reduce my intake.

Guess if its a nice wine and it helps you feel more relaxed, then its very difficult to say no.

I do find that its a problem going out and finding a low calorie drink to enjoy. Fruit juices have a lot of sugar, fizzy drinks are equally bad and wine is high calorie too. I do get bored ordering a sparkling water on a night out.

Hi. After checking out the calorie values I now have a gin and slimline tonic as a substitute for wine if I want a glass of something with my dinner. Only about 60 calories in a 25ml measure of gin, and nothing in the slimline tonic, so a definite reduction on the glass of wine.

Was out at the weekend with family and did have a couple of glasses of wine but also use sparkling water with a slice of lemon as an alternative to the diet coke type options (not a coke fan myself, so much prefer the sparkling water). So far it seems to be working as I am down just over a kg so far and have only just started a few days ago !

Well done! Keep it up. Will try the gin and slimline tonic as it sounds a better option.

Hi and welcome, F61 :)

I'm with ArgyllGirl, can't bring myself to refer to you in such a negative way! ;)

I'm a sugar addict and had to cut it out completely, the same as for any other addiction. For me, it's easier to have none, than to have a little! You could maybe try a couple of squares of high cocoa solid chocolate per day, to see if that satisfies you?

I advise that you join in with all of the activities that Hidden has suggested, as they will all help you on your journey.

Wishing you all the best :)

I have been a chocolate and sugar addict too. What's worked for me is eliminating sugary stuff in my diet and eating healthy satiating meals. I also aim to have some protein with each meal. This helps in reducing cravings and comfort eating. I wish you all the best!

in reply tomatets

I will try increasing my protein intake and do try to cook healthy meals at home. The comfort eating is the difficult part. Thank you!

A touch of tough love here- please please change your name to something positive. Negative self talk, no matter how jokey, does have a tangible negative effect.

Look to positive psychology. Look at what's right with you and build on that.

You might find the happiness log on this site useful. Give it a whirl, what you got to lose? Except weight.

It's called The Happiness Challenge on this site. A great positivity training tool.

Good luck! You came to the right place!!
