BMI. Not a square divided by a weight. A volume divided by a weight!

Sure. I am overweight. But I am do not think ideal weight targets are realistic. It is difficult to explain why but the method. Height x height. Divided by weight is nonsense. But should be an approximate guess. At body density. Which is the weight of a volume.

I mean that people. Are three dimensional. A person has weight. Height. And also depth and width. A spoke to this with a doctor. And he agreed with me. The formula for BMI is flawed. Height x height / weight = BMI in kg per metres squared. Nonsense. BMI should have the units Kg / metres cubed!

Hello SuperSlimmer and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum

I agree that BMI alone is not a perfect measure of health and fitness. I was advised to try to lose 10% of my body weight as this significantly improves health.

Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you. Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page. And if you just want to chat, to say hello or share any news or struggles then look out for What's Happening Today thread.

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask

Best wishes

Anna

Well yes Anna. But I don't really know who are! I am not sure whether to take your advice or not. Because. I'm Rob Farr. Who the hell are you?

It is great that you are the administration of this group. And a volunteer. I can see, that the group is very successful. When I heard myself. That an old friend was suffering from a weight problem. Over in America. I tried to set up a similar group on Facebook. I don't want to come across as a bully. And I am feeling pretty weak at the moment. But hurting weaker people. Is the definition of bullying! Sure. I appreciate the advice of the NHS. But the NHS certainly, would not give me a job. Due to a family history of war, thuggery and drinking. I am pretty sure something must be done about this and we should be the ones to get rich off it!

I am only 4ft 9" because of my disability (femurs/thigh bones shortened by 20cm each side) and I have short arms. I am missing some of my biggest muscles.... so BMI doesn't work for me. I mean, to get to a "healthy" BMI I'd look awful! My two sisters are both 5ft 9" and very active, sizes 12/14. I have got to 9st 7lb and size 16 and I look healthy and feel healthy. BMI can only be an approximate guide, but yes, it isn't something set in stone.

Plus any weight loss if you are carrying around a huge amount of excess is going to place a huge strain on joints, heart, lungs, etc.

I feel a million times better for having lost my "excess poundage"!
