Programme title:

"Food Unwrapped Summer Diet Special"

Channel 4 at 8pm to 9pm (UK time).

The information regarding this programme states:

"Can caffeine help us burn calories? Can diet drinks make you fat? Plus: Chocolate that could be good for you; and the secret ingredient in redbush tea that could help us burn fat."

I'm going to set my record button to hopefully catch that programme, as it sounds interesting.

Zest :-)

Don't know what others thought but I thought there was lots of very poor science in the programme.

No idea why boiling off coke and diet coke tell us how fattening each of them is! The issue, as I understand it with artificial sweeteners is that they have the same impact of raising blood sugar and therefor insulin, as proper sugar. Insulin, to my understanding (along with cortisone and a few other hormones) is really the bad guy in terms of obesity and type 2 Diabetes - they didn't even mention. there are lots of research papers that say this and they are from people who are not paid by the sugar industry. I believe it is shameful how the sugar industry have messed with their research over decades.

I was interested that a breathalyser test showed a higher number for vodka and diet coke than for vodka and ordinary coke.

Don't understand why they don't explain metabolic rate properly but let someone run up and down steps, blow into a gadget and say you have increased your metabolic rate by 100 calories.

You may have heard the phrase blinded by science, I think this demonstrates it.

The outcome seemed to be drink strong coffee and diet coke. Not for me thank you.

Please do offer different opinions, I may have missed something.

Hi Ceals ,

I was interested to see your reflections on the programme. Thanks for sharing them, and I hope other people will also use this thread to share their reactions too, if they want to. I think it's really good to discuss programmes and share ideas etc.

My own thoughts on it - probably because I wasn't really analysing it for the scientific back-up, due to having suffered horrible headaches for days from my bunged up ear (can't wait for my procedure tomorrow - really hope it sorts me out)...

Anyway, I liked the fact that they found that the bacteria in the yoghurt, and the kefir was able to get to the stomach ok - I have been drinking kefir regularly, and am hopeful that my gut bacteria are thriving. I won't bother so much with sauerkraut or kimchi, and will stick to the yoghurt and the kefir.

I also found the discussion about Rooibos tea was interesting - I didn't realise it was related to the legume family, and not a 'tea' per se. I don't like the taste of it, so not sure I'll be changing my buying patterns.

I like coffee, but I don't really like the idea of having much coffee prior to a work-out - more out of fear for my heart-rate than anything else!!!

I don't drink coke or diet coke anymore, but I was recently recommended by a Pharmacist - and also previously by a GP that if I am ever in dire need of rehydration, that the full-sugar version of Coke would be preferable, so I am mindful of that, if I ever need that.

Those are just a few of my reflections, and I'd love to hear other people's too - thanks for starting the reflecting Ceals, and hope you're having a great week.

Yes the Rooibos tea interested me too. I actually do like it but only drink it occasionally. I was also fascinated that it was a member of the legume family.

Very interesting that you were given the info about rehydrating with "real" coke rather than diet by two different authoritative figures.

Hope your ear gets sorted and you are able to get relief.

Take care
