Hi everyone. Decide to take control of my weight problem which is due to a diet of chocolate, cake and being a lazy cook as there is just me in the household and seems pointless to put oven on for one. Bmi states I need to lose 3 stone but think half of that will be my first aim. I'm vegetarian and if anyone has great tasting ( no mushroom) recipes or ideas I would be very grateful.

Hi and welcome, Celia :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

i won't be able to help much with the recipes but as regards cooking, i was sometimes like that when my husband was away for work and it was just me and the kids. I sometimes stuck the oven on for goujons and chips. Again! i think what might suit you is doing freeze bags if you have the space. It means you can make in bulk for instance enough for three or four meals and freeze what you don't eat. Also if you make a double batch of something it would do for the following evening.....maybe changing it slightly on the second night so it's not exactly the same meal.

good luck. Check the feed your family for 20 website as they do good ideas on freeze meals👍

Thank you for your advise, I'm going to get more organised and cook in batches. My freezer is empty at the moment so I've got no excuse not to fill it with healthy food rather than junk. 😊

Hi Celia

Welcome aboard I think you'll like it.

Here's a couple of my fav veg recipes:

bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/774...

bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/vege...

I always make for 4, we generally eat 2, 1 is tomorrow's lunch and one for the freezer. You soon build a stock of meals. I'll be on my own when the boy goes to Uni and I'm hoping this system will leave me only needing to shop 2 or 3 weeks of the month.

You're definitely worth putting the oven and cooking good fresh food :)

Have a great day

Hi, Celia and Welcome :)

I never used to eat during the day as I am here on my own and the weight piled on. I counted my calories and was only having between 500-600 during the week and 800 ish at the weekend.

BMI calculator says I NEED between 1800-2200 approx a day so I am now making sure I have breakfast, lunch, dinner and a couple of snacks ( not easy when not used to eating as much) but even though it is only 12 days since I started the weight has already started to come off.

We need to look after ourselves and believe that we are worth making the effort for.

Well it is definitely working another 1.5lb this week, so 3lb off in just 2 weeks by eating more :)

I also resent putting on the oven for one... Until I bought a combi microwave... I use the conventional settings all the time now. Heats in 5 minutes. Cooks really fast, and self timed. I eat much better now than before.. Stopped putting on weight. Now here trying to shift some! . Was one of the best investments for a long time. Keep strong

I know cooking for 1 sometimes seems a chore but have you considered cooking batches of food for the freezer? It's important to eat healthily and look after yourself, you're less likely to turn to chocolate & cake if you do. Good luck.

Well you sound like me, I'm also a lazy cook, and on my late shifts, often have my slowxooker on, it's fab, i've listed some of my recipes in the recipes/snack section on your right hand side of the screen.

As others have said batch cooking can be great, things such as omletttes can be good, with a saldad and a roll, I used to eat quiche often (well omlette is crustless quiche hot!!)

lots of easy on the hob recipes, lots of things to try, also I would consider getting a double oven, i tend to use only half of mine (tho awaiting new oven .....................main one element gone.

Motivate yourself away from the choc and eat more low sugar fruit, good luck!!

Hi fellow veggie! I get a lot of inspiration from the Food Monster App.(onegreenplanet.org) it's vegan based but there's thousands of recipes to view, with easy step by step instructions. I also use a lot of Quorn or make Seitan if I want the texture of meat. The Greek Vegan is another good site. I found a breakfast apple cake which is delicious and cook it with less sugar so it's not too sweet (or fattening..). Hope these help. Good luck!
