Can you please tell me......

I've been reading and making notes so that I can plan and make a start and so far I have a couple of questions.......firstly, how do I do the overnight porridge? 2: it's difficult after over 40 years of focusing on low fat and/or fat free products to now be using full fats instead. Is the reason really to keep us feeling fuller for longer? Sorry to sound so ignorant but sometimes I just need to know why. 3: what is guacamole and rose harrissa paste?

I now need to plan my food for the week and shop accordingly. I must say I am feeling quite excited.

Thankyou all in advance for support and encouragement.

I want some nicer weather to appear now! I don't like cold, windy, cloudy stuff, not the encouragement needed to go out for a run although they do say it's going to get better this afternoon.

Good morning Chrysanthemum and well done on your planning 😊

I've never made overnight oats, I cook mine in the microwave! But I'm sure someone will be along to advise.

With regards to fat, it does seem strange after all these years but it really does help you feel full. For example I've swapped the sultanas I used to put in my porridge for 30ml single cream (I weigh it and it's not a huge amount)

Guacamole is mashed avocado, quite high in fat and protein. I don't like it so don't eat it, although I do occasionally have an avocado.

At the end of the day, it's about balance, choosing how you 'spend' your calories and getting the best value. I still include all my favourites like cheese eggs and bread, but carefully watch portion size.

Finally, I strongly recommend the new Daily diary, its great for seeing what others eat and how they manage their calories.

Best wishes

Anna

The diary is a great place to use all of your planning so that we can learn from you too Chrysanthemum

Hi Chrysanthemum and well done for planning your strategy.

In answer to your questions...

1. Don't know, only started eating porridge this year and do the basic 3.5 mins of nuking method. Not sure if George56 can help as we did have a discussion about the world porridge championships up near his neck of the woods.

2. Everything I've read on here, from the people that know, points towards a big 'yes'.

3. Is that one paste or two different items? I'm a huge guacamole fan but have put rose harrissa paste on my 'never to be tried again' list. Mixing the two would end up with rose flavoured guacamole, I guess. I shiver at the thought.

I'm with you on the weather. Good luck on your run.

Hi Chrysanthemum , I mixed oats into yoghurt last week and left over night then added fruit in the morning, first time I have done it, it was very nice. I think some people use fruit juice or benacol. I'm sure somebody will tell you later.

Don't ever be frightened to ask questions, we're all learning. Anna is right, Daily Diary is great for ideas.

Good luck😊

I will give that a go then lucigret as it will be a handy thing to take to work and dip into throughout the mornings. Thankyou.

Welcome it's absolutely ok to ask questions we're all here to support each other. I've had overnight oats before when I know I have a busy morning and need to rush out the door in the morning. I've always done them with dry oats, yogurt sometime plain or mullerlight. Then fruit either fresh or frozen both work. Stick in the fridge overnight. frozen fruit defrosts by the time you eat it in the morning. Grab in the morning then go. If you google it you can get some ideas for variety. Good luck

Hi and welcome

I have overnight porridge most days

1/2 cup (30g) oats

1/2 cup semi-skimmed milk

Fruit or spices of choice (berries, stewed apple, banana, cinnamon) up to you

You can add sugar or sweetener but I find it to sweet for me

Simply put all in a lidded container give it a shake and put in the fridge for at least 6 hours

I mix up the fruit each day, just to keep it interesting

Enjoy xx

Hi Chrysanthemum good questions.

I buy rose Harrisa paste in a little jay style Waitrose, ordinary Harrisa is available too. I find just the tip of a teaspoon swirled into my Greek yogurt is a really good salad dressing. I would never previously have used yogurt as a salad dressing-I was missing out. Could also be a dip for carrot sticks.

Guacamole-just bash up an avacado (full of good fats) with a little very finely chopped onion and tomato. Lovely. You can add lots of other things too. Don't be constrained by what it "should" be.

Overnight oats are basically oats soaked in milk (or water) in the fridge overnight. Eat cold or heat up,if you like, soaking reduces cooking time.

I have recently started making my own cashew nut milk (no need to do this), but I find the result so creamy and don't cook. I soak 40g of rolled oats (not porridge oats) in 150mls of my milk. In the morning I add 10g each of flax seeds and sunflower seeds. You don't have to add these or could add blueberries or some other fruit. Sometimes I add cinnamon.

Hope that helps and I haven't bored you with too many details.

Good luck with your planning and shopping.

Ahh Ceals. You read my mind with your answers in this post. I have often heard about overnight oats but never knew if you eat it hot or cold 😟.

And I like your idea of harrisa paste in yoghurt for a salad dressing, think that would go nice in a pasta salad too.

I bought a bag of frozen avocado halves some time ago but never knew what to do with them. Think I will try some of your Guacamole on ryvittas for lunch today 😀

Have a super Sunday 👍🏻

You can also use frozen avocado in smoothies.

Glad to know I was of some use-I do tend to get carried away when talking cookery. Always bothered that I might be boring people.

Hi Chrysanthemum . One of the reasons full fat is better is that it doesn't need any sugar to make it palatable, like the fat-free versions. Fats keep you full longer because with sugar you get that "sugar rush" which makes you crave more. Fat does not make you fat - it's just the name which is confusing! For many years we dieters had been told to eat low-fat dairy products on the grounds that fat is bad for us and makes us fat. But now they're saying the big mistake was lumping all fats together. Fatty fish, for example, now gets the thumbs up all round. Full fat dairy is also making a comeback. A study in Sweden has shown that those who ate the most high-fat dairy products had a 23 per cent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who ate the least. There's loads of info on this if you are interested - just Google it. It helps put to bed the old ideas about what you can and can't eat to lose weight. And I certainly think that healthy eating these days is much more exciting than it used to be 30 or 40 years ago in the low-fat era.

Good riddance to the low fat era! Thankyou for the explanation here. It is very interesting. For years and years I've had skimmed milk for cereals and tea but recently I've switched to semi skimmed and everything tastes that much nicer to me especially as I've found that as I've got older my taste buds are not as good and I crave more taste! 😄
