Fitbit query....

I am thinking of buying a Fitbit for my dad as a birthday present as he wants to lose weight and get fitter. Is a Fitbit just a glorified pedometer or do you think they can really help with motivation?

Can anyone recommend a particular make?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences of them!

I have a Jawbone Up (after a recommendation from Caz28 )

It cost £15 from Amazon as is perfect as an activity tracker, I highly recommend it 😊

I think the Fitbit does have more functions but it depends upon your budget 😊

I bought a basic Fitbit and linked it to my computer in January. I have found it a great motivator. Yes it is a glorified pedometer but the other functions include recording food intake, hydration, miles walked, gradients climbed, active minutes and even sleep all of which I have found helpful. There is a lot of controversy this week about pedometers and fitness gizmos. (Janet Street Porter in The I and a researcher in the USA reported in the papers). If they get you moving more all well and good but don't obsess about the stats. I've lost 18 lbs since January and using the Fitbit has been one part of a health improvement plan (I don't 'diet') Daisy

I love my fitbit charge 2. Its helped me lose oodles of weight, but more importantly raised my fitness levels and general awareness of the importance of regular activity. This model was around £100 - but If I use it for a year that's less than £2 per week. Loads less than a gym membership :)

I can even get text messages on mine.

Fitbits do so such more than a simple pedometer, but that may be all that your father requires to motivate him.

Good luck Seuzan
