Hi, I'm a 50 yr old man , i have Stage 4 OA of one knee that will at some point in the future need TKR I wish to delay this for as long as i can to avoid having to repeat it 10yrs after As the OA has advanced my activity /exercise levels have dropped to virtually nil, as a direct result i have gained a lot of weight which in turn is now having an impact on my general heath ie my BP is hovering in and out of stage 2 levels, i want to avoid medication if at all possible , I'm hoping to get a knee brace and with that be able to exercise more and loose the weight again , i have lost a little buy a small change in diet , but the days of tasty inexpensive fresh salad veg has come to an end,
I also suffer with IBS and the diet meds would likely make this worse
So the loose weight is all very good but not so easy if you have other health issues that prevent you

I'm sorry to hear of all your problems, but there are many members of this community, with a whole host of medical conditions, that are successfully losing weight. Exercise is great for toning and well-being, but not absolutely essential for weight loss. Diet plays a much bigger part, so don't worry, all is not lost

Hello tom50 , Having Osteo Arthritis must be very challenging to deal with. However, I will agree with moreless that you do not have to take loads of exercise to lose weight. I have managed to lose a stone, and I just went swimming occasionally, and since winter set in I haven't even done that! If you can look at your portion sizes and be careful with fatty foods such as cheese for example, you should start to see some weight come off.
It's good that you will get a support for your knee so maybe this will help you to get some gentle exercise. Losing weight isn't easy, but part of the key is to just keep going! Wishing you all the best.
Hi Tom! Welcome to the forum, and good luck. I really relate to your post - I've got osteoarthritis in both my knees, and in the pastccouple of years my hips too. I've gradually slowed down over the past 10 years or so, and gradually put on a couple of stone. The docs have told me if I get to 50 without needing new knees I'm doing well! I'm 44. I know that weighing less is going to make a MASSIVE difference to this outlook - and I'm sure you know it too. Our poor knees need a break. I can't do any ferocious exercise either, but I can dig my allotment and walk (instead of driving). I've just started pilates too - I can't do all the exercises due to the knees, but a good 75% - maybe you could try that?
Have you thought of growing your own salad / veg etc?
I have a small allotment and grow most of my own stuff. You can also do it on a balcony or even just on kitchen window sills (for fresh lettuce, tomatoes, chives, basil etc).
Set yourself some small challenges that you can meet and take small steps.
You can do it and will feel the benefits. Good luck!
Your story is very similar to mine, painful OA making exercise difficult, I also have thyroid issues and IBS 😕 These things undoubtedly make losing weight difficult but not impossible. The option of doing nothing left me miserable and with chronic pain, losing weight has definitely helped 😊 I still get pain, but feel so much more optimistic about the future.
