Simple, don't eat 'unnatural' food, ie refined sugar and processed foods.

However this is esier said than done as our modern lifestyle and advertising have accustomed our tastebuds to accept excess sugar, salt and synthetic chemicals in our diet as normal. It takes time for the tastebuds to recover and appreciate just how good natural food really tastes, but it is well worth the effort.

I agree with MW50 ; if you cut out processed food, particularly foods containing added sugars, you will probably lose weight without having to pay much attention to how much you are eating.

You would either need to make everything you eat from fresh ingredients or (if you buy food that has labels) do a bit of homework first to understand exactly what you are eating. In reality, you'd probably do a combination of the two.

Hi and welcome Abigailo :)

Take a look at the Pinned Posts section, to the right of your screen (bottom, if you're using a mobile) and have a look at the Welcome Newbies thread, it has a link to the NHS 12 week plan, which is a guide to healthy living, rather that a specific diet plan.

Look at the Topics section beneath that, for posts that could answer any questions you may have.

Consider joining any, or all, of our challenges, as they're fun and motivating.

Join us for the monday group weigh-in. If you follow Zest and myself, you'll be notified when we post the threads. However, the latest thread can always be found in the events section, to the right of the home page.

Be active on the forum, as that's where we exchange ideas and get our daily dose of motivation and inspiration :)

Wishing you all the very best :)

Thanks

Like the other people posting here, I'd say stop buying heavily processed foods. Obvious things like fizzy drinks, crisps, chocolate bars, biscuits, etc. But also TV dinners, ceral bars, smoothies and those little salads you can buy in tubs can be horrifyingly high in calories. The traffic light guide on packaged foods is quite good - if anything's got a red label on it, and it's a processed food, best to leave it in the shop.

That leaves you with all the more natural foods - fresh meat, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, plain yoghurt (that you can add fresh fruit to, to make it more interesting). Personally, I love my bread and potatoes, so include them as "healthy", but I've cut my portion sizes of these foods in half, as it's very easy to over-indulge in them.

You'll need to cook from scratch most of the time, but this doesn't always need to be time-consuming - scrambled eggs on toast (or baked beans on toast) are quick and very good, and fish doesn't take long to cook either. Meat/fish/cheese sandwiches are all quick to make.

The final thing I'd say is to weigh and measure your portions very carefully - just because it's "natural", doesn't mean it is calorie free. There are plenty of very heavy people out there who only eat natural foods, but they eat too much of them, with the same result as the people who eat junk food all the time.

Good luck!
