I decided the new job was not for me, so boring! So now I have decided to take early retirement instead and have been worrying all week about how the stock markets are e performing as they will impact my pension
I had some really bad news about a good friend over in Cyprus, he passed away aged just 65, this was just a week after another friend died, she lived in Cyprus too.
I went for a walk today and realised that my hernia does give me problems after being on my feet for too long. I an due a consultation next week and then will have to wait until my operation plus recuperation before being able to exercise properly
So I did have a "mini wake", in celebration of my two friends who have recently passed, (They were both Irish), and also have comfort ate a bit this past week.
My clothes still fit me but I need to put a halt to the biscuit and cake eating and get my focus back - fast!
Have a good weekend everyone and we can count our blessings - to absent friends

What a week you've had. Sorry about your two friends passing, and that the job didn't work out. I think everyone worries about managing financially in retirement, but I think you seem to spend less somehow and adjust to your income. I for one am pleased to be out of the rat race. Hope the consultation goes well. Im sure you will soon get back on track with the healthy eating. Have a good week end!
Hi kantara71. Sorry to hear you have left your new job and that you have received some sad new recently. I think a bit of comfort eating is probably allowed after the week you have had. I hope you can get your hernia operation soon and that will allow you to get back to your normal exercise routine too. Wishing you a good weekend
Hi kantara71 sounds like you have had a very tough week. Very sad news about your two friends and it not working out with your new job. I hope you can now look forward to the future when you are pain free and can enjoy your retirement. I go by how my clothes fit (more than what it says on the scales) and it doesn't sound like you've done too much damage. Tomorrow is another day 😉

if you love being retired half as much as me, you l be happy, good luck 😊
Sorry your job wasn't for you and for the loss of your two friends. I hope you enjoy your retirement now you have decided to go ahead with it and think of all the things you want to do, see and be a part of. Good luck and best wishes. Bev
Oh my kantara71 what a week. Losing dear friends is never easy, especially so young, 😞 It makes us all very aware of our own mortality.
Sorry the job was such a disappointment, but as another "early-retiree" I can highly recommend it. As Caz28 says, you spend less somehow, and certainly have more time for exercise and cooking from scratch.
With regards to your hernia, I am also having a few health issues and have had to accept weight loss isn't going to happen for a while 😕 However, I am not prepared wipe out all my hard work either, so have regained control of my eating and adjusted my exercise regime, which you will do too 😊
Have a good weekend, hope the sun shines and you can raise a toast to your absent friends 😊
Thank you Anna, i will not let all the hard work go to waste, I like being "slim", relatively speaking of course, and have no intention of buying larger clothes ever again!
I picked up 2 bargains from the Charity shop yesterday, two pairs of trousers, both 38 inch waist, and they fit too
Hi John, if the job wasn't for you, then what is for you? Think about what you really like to do. You seem to have a drive to be busy, so maybe make some plans, people stay busy and even keep earning through their retirement. It doesn't have to feel like an off switch, so many shades in between. I hope you can start to see positive things on the horizon, even if it all feels a bit difficult now. Take care, and put the biscuits away, out of reach
Thanks Ruth, I don't think it is so much as what I like to do for work as to what is available in the area and also the pay is very poor. Things have changed in the UK job market over the past 10-15 years, most of which time I was living and working abroad. You are right, I need to keep busy and, apart from a garden project to complete over here I also have a property to maintain in Cyprus so we will be going over there twice a year.
I have done a healthy shop this morning and locked the biscuits and cakes away too, have a good weekend John
Hi John, my husband took unexpected and unplanned very early retirement after or 21 year old son was killed and he found that he could nolonger concentrate on his work which was very demanding.
After the first 4 years of shock had worn of, we realised that we had put on a stone for each year, he started to do long distance walking and as he had no intention of carrying a heavy rucksack has immersed himself in researching and eventually making his own gear, back pack tent/s stoves, we even have a dehydrator so he can make his own calorie counted and tasty dehydrated meals.
Whilst I am not suggesting that you follow in his footsteps I am, tentatively suggesting that you may be interested in a mini version. It took him a little while to build up his fitness level but now he gets depressed if he can't get to the hills, his walks vary from one day to 4 weeks, it has become a way of life. You could view these outings as a new 'job' researching walks in your area and posting a personal blog.
If you are confined to a city you could post a 'spoof' guided walk, listing all the interesting things on your chosen walk.
I would like to say that it may sound expensive it is still cheeper than a gym. There are specialist blog sites for this type of supper light weight walking/camping.
As for living on a reduced amount of money, at first it felt like our legs had been kicked out from under us but it's not as scary as I thought it would be. I view it not as a hardship but as a personal test of my ingenuity I now feel quite smug.
I volunteer at a charity shop and find that it fills in the void of a paid job while giving me contact with a wider circle of people. I work hard and don't nibble the biscuits but do have the tea breaks. The work is a lot harder than people think and every day is different.
I hope that this reassures you that there is life after paid work.
You may want to consider part time work or volunteering at an animal rescue centre, many of them are looking for people to walk the dogs and do basic training.
Thank you for taking the time to reply and for some of your suggestions. It is an initial shock, not to be either working or looking for work, but I know I have enough to be getting on with to fill my days. The garden project is ongoing and will continue once i have had my hernia operation. We are also planning to visit family in the south of England more often. John
Lots going on at the moment, sorry to hear of the loss of your friends .you know what to do to get back on track.im going to Cyprus tomorrow I'll raise a glass to you and your friends .
Good luck in Cyprus, it is very hot out there at the moment and yes, raise a glass to toast my friends, either a Keo or an Efes, depends upon where you are going
We were due to attend a wedding,we are not now attending but we are still going on holiday as we were not able to reschedule.my late mum loved Cyprus so I think it will be great to remember her whilst there .
My sincere condolences on the deaths of your 2 Irish friends in Cyprus, and I can completely understand that you comfort ate in such circumstances.
I hope your Consultation goes ok next week, and that they can organise a date for your hernia operation, and I know you've got a lot on your plate in that respect, but hopefully you'll recuperate well and will feel a lot better once it's all over.
Great that you've chosen to retire, rather than pursue a job you were finding boring, and hopefully you will enjoy that life-choice and it will have many silver linings ahead.
I hope you're having a good weekend, and that you're relaxing today.
Just finished watching the ladies final on TV, feet up and a curry cooking on the stove All that is missing is a glass of prosseco and some strawberries and cream - John
