Hi PB

First, I'd ask the right questions. Hope you don't mind if this is direct. Food doesn't reduce BMI, it raises it.

BMI is a handy quick metric for most people, it's easy and cheap. Better metrics are body fat (weight or percentage), and lean muscle mass (ditto). The higher the latter, the higher your basal metabolism (BMRate) - energy used for basic survival such as running fundamental internal physiological processes, such as waste removal via liver, kidneys. Muscle burns energy even at rest, so think about gaining muscle and making it efficient rather than lowering BMI. Walk, dance, gym, whatever floatsyerboat.

Also, think in terms of reducing body fat: keep good fats in your diet, i.e. essential fats such as omega 3, 6 (oily fish, nuts, seeds...)... seems to be some evidence that some saturated fat, which is natural, is also good, but keep it down, trim visible fat off meat for example and go for leaner cuts of beef, game, poultry rather than porky stuff or processed meat. Go easy on carbs, in fact keep these in line with your activity - they are mainly for fuel, but if you think of large quantities of low calorie dense greens as carbs then you get vits and minerals into the bargain and it's difficult to overeat on spinach! Keep your fibre up - fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, grains...oats esp. and quinoa etc.

My humble opinion is not to count calories, but to get in tune with your appetite and eating the above will keep you feeling full without being high calorie, so fat loss should ensue naturally. Keep well hydrated, especially if very active.

I hope that's helpful and good luck.

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, if you need somewhere to start.

Stick to unprocessed foods, as Ovets has said, lots of vegetables and good quality protein. Lots of advice on here!

I have spent the last 2 years trying one thing after another to lose weight and finally dicided to do something different. I've uped my pain meds and started walking and cycling. Yes I'm in pain, a lot of pain but that's nothing new but the walking and cycling are helping, I've lost 2kg this week and that's in spite of a cream cake yesterday and chocolate the day before. My target is to not gain and to get as healthy as I possibly can before I have some major surgery. So any loss is a bonus.

There's no set foods. Eat what you like, just in control! My BMI was 42.9 when I started. I cut down my calories, started counting them and exercise, and 15 months !after its at 29.

I e not changed any foods, just eat everything in moderation :)

Not what you're looking for?
