Sounds like the article is probably leaning towards the Low Carb High Fat way of healthy eating .... no refined flour, just small amounts of wholegrain and include good fats like butter ( which is definitely better for you than synthetic margarine ) I admit when I was losing my weight last year I ate just small amounts of wholegrain bread but switched to real butter & cream, after 30 years of low fat spreads etc !!.
Margarine is highly processed and the "powers that be" are slowly coming round to the idea that processed is not good. It's got the wrong fats in it (omega 3 and omega 6 - couldn't swear which one is the good one!) - butter is definitely better. There's a lot of info on the internet about it. I think the jury is out on bread, especially whole grain, but there is a big group of people who are giving up bread completely (in fact most carbs). It seems to work for them.
My personal opinion is that sugar is the "baddy". The trouble is carbohydrates are broken down into sugar (or glucose), whole grains more slowly, but ultimately they are glucose and that's what makes you fat - not necessarily the fat you eat. I only reached this opinion this time round, for about 15 years I did the usual low fat diet, but after initial success I just steadily increased in weight until I was diagnosed as a pre-diabetic. Now diabetics have a problem with glucose, so for me it makes sense to reduce the stuff that makes me ill. Lost 3 stone that way.
Like Jay has said, I have cut out bread and only have butter, olive oil., coconut oil. The body breaks down carbohydrates and stores any excess as fat, if you consume natural fats then any excess is expelled by the body.
Hi Kantara, interesting that. So what do you use the butter for? or on should I say. Learning lots here!
ha ha, you are thinking that i only use butter for putting on bread I use butter in making scrambled eggs and sometimes on top of vegetables like brocolli. carrots etc. I always weigh the butter when used in this way and count it towards my daily intake. John
I was thinking of jacket potatos (well, the small small ones!!). I'm not a fan of bread myself never have been. I get too bloated. Good idea with the scrambled egg, I'll pinch that one from you
Those too but I had cut out potatoes for 2 months, just introducing them back into my plan now but keeping the carbs below 50g per day.
Try 15g of grated cheese in the scrambled eggs too mmmmmmm
margarine is artifical ....not good ...
butter is better along with olive oils .
bread refined carbs ....
refined carbs can raise insulin levels ...as your body has to deal with a rush of carbs and so produces insulin to deal with it storing that rush of energy into fat ....after the body has taken what it needs .
The thinking now is to eat things in thier natural state ...cook from fresh .
What was the reason for not eating? Orange juice is very sugary, marg is full of additives but whole wheat bread seems a bit puzzling. The trick really is not to deprive yourself but just have less of it!
Some people are ok with bread, others are not, although refined white bread may not be a good long term idea for anyone. If you are insulin resistant, then it's a good idea to cut out bread, whole grain or not. If your weight loss has stalled, cutting out bread is often a good way of restarting it.
There is a debate to be had about whether or not wheat, in any form, is good for you. If you have any digestive problems it's probably a good idea to cut it out and see if that helps.
