Everyone seems to be young. There doesn't seem to be anyone my age that wants to lose weight. I can't believe I am the only one. I am 77 and have just realised that I am, according to the NHS BMI chart 3st. overweight, although I do think that is pushing it because they don't seem to take age into consideration. I am active, I walk my dog twice every day, I do gardening and I watch my diet or think I do. I don't eat meat but I do eat fish so I am not completely vegetarian. Can anyone help or am i a lone old fogey.

Hi Chrissie, I'm just a spring chicken of 54 but think it's great that you're working on your health and fitness. I hope you can find someone near your age to share your journey but in any case we're all here to encourage you. I'm finding the NHS 12 week plan very helpful to keep track of my calories and exercise and there is useful advice each week.

Maybe in your local area there is a group for retired people who are wanting to lose weight or get more active, there is one where I live. If not, perhaps you could start one among your friends. You already seem pretty active and motivated. Good luck!

Hi ChrissieUK,

I just wanted to say welcome to the forum. You asked if there's anyone nearer your age on here - I'm not sure how old everyone is - but I think the NHS 12 week plan is a plan that is suitable for adults across the spectrum of age, and I perceive you to be a Spring Chicken really at 77 - I think it might depend how you feel as to whether you also perceive yourself that way.

It's great that you're active, and you walk your dog twice every day, and also gardening sounds like fantastic exercise, as well as being relaxing and therapeutic.

I do a weigh-in thread every Monday if you want to join us there - we are mixed ages, and I don't know how old everyone is - I suspect most are younger than you, but I don't think you should let that put you off, because age is 'but a number' (at least in my book), and if you were 95 or thereabouts and wanted to lose weight, why not? You're only 77 years young.

Welcome to the forum and hope you'll find a supportive and friendly community.

Lowcal :-)

I'm 53 and I have a 19 year old who is offering me advice.

Fat is not ageist - it is happy to hang around with ANYONE!

And you are not that much of an old phogey if you're happily surfing the web!

I'm interested - from everything you have said you shouldn't be 3 st overweight.

So what do YOU think could be the problem - whats putting on that weight do you think?

Hi Chrissie, i,m 68. And finding losing weight difficult. You are not on your own here what ever age you are. Keep posting 😉

If you look on the couch to 5k forum there are several runners in their 70s who absolutely amaze me (I'm 36, one of the 'young' people on here :) ). If you're interested in starting something like learning to run, then I definitely recommend it, and the folks on that forum would be happy to address any age-related queries. nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/... healthunlocked.com/couchto5k

Re the 3 stone overweight - if this doesn't feel like a problem to you then maybe it isn't. I started this process of trying to lose weight at 2 stone overweight but most of my friends didn't think I'd put that much on - I kept the fact I was into size 16s pretty much a secret. Not everyone fits into the guidelines - some carry extra weight better than others.

You don't really state a reason for wanting to lose weight apart from the BMI chart. What would you really like to achieve? Improved fitness, a slimmer figure, a healthier diet? Perhaps simply losing 1 stone and improving fitness a little would be enough?

Good for you Chrissie1 I'm nearly 67 and am 4 stone overweight. I spent most of my life up until my 50's being slim and very active. Due to back problems and the 'Good Life' with my 3rd husband in the last 15 years the pounds have piled on!

I will never stop trying at 77, 87 or 97.

Wishing you the best,

Christine

A very good family friend is 80 in December and has just started to try and lose weight with me. She always tells me that age is immaterial, as she stills feels in her 40's she absolutely inspires me. She tells me that she wants to look glam at her 80th, She has quite severe arthritis and only manage a short walk every day, but so do I so we are both the same, I'm 50 in November.

Don't worry about your age you sound very active and amazing and I'm sure you will be able to get the 3 stone off.

Hope you have a great week.
