Nearly fell off the treadmill I was laughing so much....

8 treadmills at the gym all in a row, 6 with slender folk on and 2 with 'fatties' on ( me being 1 of the fatties). 'Fully made up' gym bunny waiting impatiently and tutting for someone to step off a treadmill so she could go on. A very buff bloke comes by, and in a very obviously aimed stage whisper, gym bunny says to him ' the problem with the gym nowadays is too many fat people here pretending to give a toss about their health. Before I had time to bristle, the buff bloke said to her ' no love, the problem with the gym nowadays is there are too many people like you here that spout tripe and don't give credit to others efforts. Too ready to put others down instead of offering support.'. Said buff bloke then turned to me and my fellow fattie and winked before walking off. I was laughing so much ( as were all 7 other treadmill walkers and everyone else in earshot) how I didn't fall off my treadmill I don't know. Said gym bunny, face beaming brighter than any lamp, stomped off to the changing room.

Dear 'Buff bloke' your support was very much appreciated......

Absolutely fantastic. Could you send 'buffbloke' round to me, he could follow me around all day cheering me up.

I would say, stand in line hun, but buff bloke was at least 20 years younger than me so If I see him at the gym again I'll tell him there is a queue for him, lol.

How funny! can't stand those over made up pretend gym/keep fit enthusiasts, but how wonderful there are still people ready to put them firmly in their place, well done to buff bloke!

Simply brilliant!

This probably won't come out right, but as a fellow fatty, well done for actually going to the gym in the first place.... If you see buffbloke again, tell him there's a bunch of us that would give him a kiss (or shake his hand at least) for being a well bought up man with manners and respect for others! I used to go to the gym and there was always a couple of people saying "look at her, why is she here at that size" and other stupid comments... One time I did actually reply that I'm here because of my size giving me health issues and was there to work out, not put on a full face of makeup and eye up the body builders.

It takes a lot to bother me, I usually just give a look of disdain and walk away from folk like gym bunny. The lady next to my treadmill had taken the first ( terrifying she told me) step to go to the gym, and she said she may not have gone back again if buff blokes response hadn't been as it was. I sat and had a cuppa with her after our session and said to not let obnoxious idiots stop her from doing her thing, that there were more people like buff bloke than gym bunny.

Right on! I have nothing but respect for fatties (myself included) gymming it/swimming it, and generally flaunting our (dwindling) flab. Haven't had any grief so far and am well prepared for it because NOTHING is going to stop me from going. Tell you what, everyone from work could come and stand round me and jeer and I would carry on regardless. This is my time and no one is taking it away from me. It's for everyone, and that guy had the right response. Wish I had been there to hear it! Well done you and keep gymming it! :D Goneonabit. Sorry ;)

Absolutely the right attitude, go girl x

Thanks everyone for your comments. If I see this guy at the gym again I am going to make a point of saying how much I appreciated his reaction to such a negative comment.

I had three months at the gym but had enough of unfriendly people and unhelpful staff. I do all my excercise at home now following a great programme of interval training combined with an interval style of light weight training and it's brilliant. Saves me a gym subscription and I do it in my own time. 50 mins workout 4 times a week and I am losing inches from all my measurements. I know some people prefer a gym but If you are self disciplined enough can do just as good if not better at home.

DonT need much equipment. I got a cheap set of £30.00 weights from Argos and a cheap foldaway bench from Amazon.

The gym can be a little off putting at times. I rarely go, just when the weather is doing its best impression of a never ending waterfall, lol. I love the rowing machine, apart from that its just the treadmill I use. Normally its best foot forward and into the fields at the back of my house with the dog. The job I do is very challenging, so I get a 12 hour stretching workout every shift!!

I agree with you that it is each to their own, and you have obviously found what works for you. I wish you every success on your weight management path x
