walking
Getting active is great for getting fit and walking is good alongside a healthy eating regime. I cant run but walk loads and im able to lose weight. I use a vivofit fitness tracker to count steps and try to hit my daily goal each day
As long as you are being active you can still lose weight, have you thought about swimming as well? That would be low impact on your leg but would give you a total body workout
I use the endomondo app. You set it to whatever activity you're doing, walking, running, cycling, whatever, and it tells you how many calories you burn. Walking actually burns about the same as running. It all adds up over a week, you'll be surprised. Lots of luck!
Hi, there is a bit of a debate whether exercise helps you lose weight but I like to think it does. I never eat back the calories I burn and I am sure I lose more by exercising more - certainly worked in this last week.
The only exercise I really do is walking (and a bit of yoga), I was very unfit when I started, barely able to do 1km, but in 6 months I can now comfortably walk 10km. I really advocate walking. As Ruth says you burn the same calories running say 5km as you do walking 5km it just takes longer.
Hope you find something that suits - good luck
I wear a Fitbit Zip tracker and clock up over 30 miles walking each week. I was running but had two bereavements early this year and now have a house full of building work so I won't go back to running until next year.
If the weather isn't good for walking outside there are some excellent YouTube walking videos by Leslie Sansone from 1 mile to 5 miles. You could start with this one youtu.be/KCe3ZS7pAC4 but she has lots on YouTube. You only need a small space to do it and can be as energetic as you like.
I walk my dog twice a day and have done since I got him in Jan 2014. That and healthy eating has helped me to lose 2 and a half stone. I don't do any other exercise. I love my walks, I feel very short changed if I miss a day and I have noticed on days off the weight creeps back up. I definitely recommend it.
definately, and much easier on your joints. My OH as an ex-squaddie always thought running was more effective, but now he's middle -aged and his knees can't take the running, he's found a brisk daily walk for 40 mins just as effective. x
Walking is good for everything
It is easier to keep at it than running, and a brisk pace (so that you walk and keep in an aerobic zone) will have benefits that go beyond burning calories
All aerobic exercise (be it walking, swimming, running, cycling...) has immense health benefits, some less known than others, like delaying - and reducing the risk - Alzheimer and dementia.
A few are mentioned here:

Having said that... I prefer running as I love walking while nature gazing... which make my walks really slow
I agree. Better for your joints and you have time to look around. I'm in a walking group but haven't been for a while due to work. Will be going back though now that I'm doing less hours. I like the social side too plus you get to see places you may not usually visit and go a tea room in a lovely location afterwards!
Thanks everyone
