Walking for fitness update - I did it!

So I set myself a challenge to walk around a 5.5 km beauty spot this week. A couple of weeks ago I was worried I wouldn't be able to do it - but today I am happy to report I DID IT!!!!! And it was actually 6.3 km. We managed it without stopping and accidentally took a long short - hence the extra distance.

The walk is actually supposed to be 5.8 km and should take 1.5 - 2 hours and we did it in 1 hour 27 mins, so faster than average too (although that seems slow to me).

I am so chuffed as walking 1 km 2 months ago was a hard slog and I needed to stop to catch me breath but now I have walked over 6 km without having to stop even once. Having said that, I am still disappointed I let myself get so unfit but no point dwelling on it:)

Ha ha! It won't be happening this year. I am too heavy to put that sort of strain on my knees but I have not totally discounted the idea of running when I am lighter:) I have looked at the program and it makes complete sense. I'll update you next year;)

Well done sueper, that's a brilliant achievement, you should be very proud of yourself.

Have a great weekend, and good luck with everything you do next week.

Thanks everyone:) Did another 4 km today and now absolutely knackered!

Fantastic! I'm so glad that you're feeling such a difference in your fitness levels. There's no point in regretting the past - just focus on the future and many more lovely long walks :-)

I'm not sure how big you are, but as an example I started c25k around 18 stone. My knees feel far better now than they did then, though part of the reason is I have lost a chunk more weight, but running has strengthened my legs and improved all my joints. Carry on with the walking until you feel ready to take it further. Walking will also strengthen your legs and that can only help. It'll also make c25k much easier if you decide to start that journey.

Thanks rmnsuk. I still have a way to go yet but I do think it is something I might try. Even my hubby says he might be up for it in time - which is a bigger shock! Before I do venture into it I will see my GP first just to check he feels it is sensible.

5 months ago I would never have expected to even contemplate running:)
