Hi everyone!

I signed up today...but to be honest havent got the foggiest about what im doing! Firstly, when u go on the bmi calculator thing and it gives you the amount of cals you should aim between is that the amount you need to stick to to lose weight? Also, how will i know when i need to drop the amount of cals to continue losing weight? Do you have to take into account fat as well?

Tia....

Hi Lyndseylou,

Well done for making a start. You will get the hang of it.

I am not an expert on this subject however, the BMI calculator gives you a guide on if and how overweight you are, it calculates how many calories you can allow yourself each day and if you are really serious about want to lose weight you will have to stick to it. For example, 32 BMI may allows you about 1400 - 1600 calories a day. As you progress and lose weight you can recalculate your BMI and it will reset the calories intake for you. This is just a guide, I believe the aim is to lose about 2lb / 1kg a week. Some do more - some less.

If you look on this forum there are plenty of people all giving out support and advice on how to go about. We all have our own ways of dealing with the determination to lose weight, whether for health reasons or to improve our appearance.

You may find having goals a good way to focus on the weeks ahead.

My own is I have given myself some firm rules that I want to stick to, like not eating in between meals and no eating after supper, are they are my weakness. I also attempt to do something energetic every day, demanding housework or a 30 mins walk (I like to walk) but I find exercise dreadfully boring. For me it seems to be working. My goal is to re-educate my mind and body not expect any food at anytime and once i reduce my weight, I intend to keep best practice.

You will have to research, think about your weaknesses and then find ways to avoid them. There is a handy calorie counter on the lose weight - live well site.

If you have any queries or just want to chat just post me.

Good luck on your 12 week journey.

this comment has reminded me that the calorie counter accessed through this site was BLOCKED by my Norton security today as dangerous.

Has anyony one else met this?

If you use a free app such as MyFitnessPal it will calculate how many calories you need to stay under to lose weight and, if you log everything you eat, you will lose weight!

I agree with Gingernut (who has been a real inspiration to many ! ). I too have used 'myfitnesspal' to calculate my calorie needs for my size /age, log my food and exercise.. and it really has worked. Took me 8 months but slowly, steadily I have lost my 2stone excess and my Bmi is a healthy 23.

I will have a look and 'myfitnesspal' sounds good to give it a go. Thanks
