Any runners on here that can advice to pluck up the courage to run around my neighbourhood or park? I'm so nervous because I'm a really self conscious person (you know how it is)! I just can't seem to do it!
Thank you

Yes I felt exactly the same as you but you just have to go for it.
You need to do it for yourself & ignore other people. I genuinely think most people won't take any notice, others will be impressed that you are having a go & if anyone thinks anything negative then they are the ones with problems.
Do you have a running plan to listen to on a phone or mp3 player? The NHS C25K podcast is great as Laura (your new best friend) will talk you through it and the first week is more walking than running. It builds gradually and is specially for new runners. The C25K forum is also great for advice and support. I was never good at running but decided to try it a few years ago & my only regret is that I didn't start sooner.
Is there anything specific holding you back or just general nerves? Honestly, if you listen to a podcast and just follow the instructions you'll have done it before you realise and you'll be so pleased with yourself. xx
thank you replying and I will definitely have to check the NHS C25K podcasts out it's nerves combined with my body, i'm really really big and when people stare I become really self conscious and stop. I have tried running before with a friend but our commitments always clashed.
I was thinking of taking my dad along with me until I feel confident when he has the time!
Definitely look at the C25K podcasts and have a go. It's walk....run....walk....run so you build up slowly and it is manageable. I'm on week 4 and loving it, I have never run before. Honestly, no-one is interested in your running, most people will be full of admiration that you are out there doing it. I find having the podcast distracts me enough to stop caring who might be looking focus on Laura and the music. You sound like you really want to do this! Go for it!! You'll feel so proud when you do
I started on Sunday, it's cold so you can wear a hat and scarf. I nearly chickened out as some 11yr olds were playing footy near the park entrance (not that they even noticed me walk passed). Then I started, was concentrating on breathing, moving and thinking how long til the walking bit again. I pretty much got cheered on by a sweet old lady. My husband and son were playing footy on a bit of the field.
Did the same around local streets this morning & will go to the park again on Sunday. It's not as bad as you think
hope00, you should just go for it! Those people who stare/make you feel conscious are probably never courageous enough to step out for a jog, hypocrites! I'm really huge too and step out proudly, when I see/hear people sniggering I pick up the pace and breeze past em faster than they can say gosh! Go for it! be proud of yourself, preparing a playlist of F***-all songs will definitely help, do give it a shot! All the best
