I'm new to the diet plan. Have to lose 3 st but cannot afford the local gym. Any ideas other than running due to a disability I cannot run.

You don't say how disabled you are, but I too can't run. I do have an exercise bike however, and do 5 km on that every day. I also walk up and down the stairs a lot more and stand to do most tasks rather than sitting. Walking, even gently, is good too.

If you can walk, make the most of this summer weather. I dont run and after a knee injury lasy year, its only recently that I started walking again pain free.

Even just 20, 30, 40 mins walk every couple of days will help and you can build up from there. The lighter evenings are a big help I find.

I sometimes can't stand or walk for long - so searched the internet & found a site called sparkpeople. Their chair based aerobic workout will really get your heart rate up and now I've got the resistance bands to try the upper body one as well. There are also lots of books around on chair/bed based yoga - don't laugh, the stretches you can get are really good. :-)

I was also gong to suggest chairobics. I'll assume if you do an internet search there's plenty out there. I've heard several fitness instructors say the best gym in the world is your own body. You're not training for a marathon so it doesn't need to be painful, just a little cardiovascular to make you puff a bit. Have you checked with your GP? You should, we don't want any underlying problem to suddenly surface - and you may get some NHS physio tailored to you. That said they don't hurry with referrals.

Thanks. My consultant recommended losing some weight for surgery due to a twisted knee cap and recently diagnosed arthritis. As I also have Spina Bifida it makes some exercise difficult, but all agree losing a bit of weight helps all round.

Losing weight will help with the knee and the arthritis. Pity I did not lose some sooner or I would have not needed a new knee - which is far from perfect but better than the wrecked one. It's balancing input and output that's important. Exercise does help but is not the be all and end all. And of course while you're sitting around there's the temptation to keep doing something with your hands. smoking, eating, drinking are all bad options. Even crochet or puzzles can help if they keep your mind off food. And that healthy balance diet we all know about but fail to acknowledge is quite important too. Good luck and I'm sorry I don't know how all that relates to SB

I lost weight 6 years a go and never went to a gym and never been to one since and probably never will. I used a rowing machine mixed with power walking and jogging and still to this day the size 8 I lost weight to. People think you can't loss weight without a gym well you certainly can and you can maintain it too I have so prove it can be done.

Have you tried doing 'step' on the first step of your staircase. Sit on your dinning room chair, cross your arms and stand up. Walk up and down your stairs as many times as you can, and increase daily. Hold your hand bag in your hand, stretch your arms straight out to the side shoulder height and lower them repeat as many times as you can. Swap handbag to other side.

I am in same situation Hun. I am disabled but I need to lose about 3-4st. Have you tried swimming. As it using every muscle in your body and the water takes the weight of you. I've been told to do about 2 lengths a week. By just going swimming once a week. It's the best exercise you can do. I have fibromyalgia and hyper mobility and arthritis and fractures to my spine as well as a leaking disc. And liver damage and vitamin D defiency. So I know how hard it is to find an exercise that I can tolerate doing as I can't really walk much. I hope this helps you. Xx
