Got diagnosed with PCOS in 2021 but have had symptoms for 10+ years.
I’ve had nothing but trouble with oral contraceptive pills so am on no hormonal treatment and have had zero support from GPs and gynaecologists.
The only option now being given to me is to have an intrauterine device/system fitted. It feels like it’s being forced on me as no one will take me seriously without getting one fitted.
Other than the pure anxiety about having one fitted, I can’t find any consistent guidance on which is better, a hormonal coil or a copper coil?
Is one better than the other? I feel sick about getting one fitted, I don’t want to end up with the wrong one.

I know exactly how you feel! I was only diagnosed at the start of this year after 15/16 years of symptoms.
Thankfully my GP referred me to the GPs Well Women’s clinic and I found someone who listened and my nurse was fantastic.
I was tried with metformin (made me very ill), 2 different types of oral contraceptives, they even doubled the doses… it didn’t work, I was put on medication to stop my periods (didn’t work), I was still having the worst symptoms and then became anaemic. Just remember sitting there completely fed up in the nurses office.
I was then given two choices, either the Mirena Coil (IUS hormonal Coil, my nurse told me if I was sent to the hospital it would be the first thing they put in, who knows if that is true) or living with it.
I decided to go with the Mirena Coil. I’ve only had it for 1 day so can’t give any insight if it works for me but I’ve had family members with the same issue and it completely stopped their periods. I have been told there is a small chance it won’t work.
Sorry I’m not much help between the two, I was only offered the Mirena Coil, my nurse told me that was the best fit for my symptoms.
Is there a nurse you can contact at the GP who would be able to discuss both with you? Or a pharmacist?
