I’ve just got back home from an ultrasound appointment. I had an abdominal and asked if I could also have a transvaginal but the doctor said it would be best to do a trans rectal as I am not sexually active

I had an mri this time last year from gastro and was referred for this scan. The doctor seemed concerned and asked if I could leave the room while he asks his colleague for advice and asked if I was with someone or alone, but I was by myself.

They then called me back in and tried the trans rectal but still the same. They found that was right ovary was very enlarged and still no sign of the left ovary.

He said he will write a report for my doctor who I have a phone consultation with next week (but I will push to speak to someone else as I don’t find him helpful at all).

I broke down on the train home just thinking about the morning as I don’t understand what it means and just wanted to get out of there.

Has anyone had a similar experience where they couldn’t see an ovary? x

Yes, on a couple of occasions the ultrasound sound technicians have not been able to see my right ovary. I got the impression that the gastrointestinal system can obscure it at times. One technician was able to put a piece of firm foam under my bottom & visualize it better this way.

That you were referred for the ultrasound by the MRI Radiologist leads me to wonder if what was seen on this ultrasound is stable in size with what was seen previously on the MRI. I have a complex ovarian cyst which has been stable in size for over a decade.

I was offered surgery at one point to remove this mass but after getting a expert second opinion (by the chair of that medical society) decided against it. It had already been followed for some time before this & the size remained stable.

I never had IBS up to that point but developed IBS type symptoms later. I live in the states & whenever I developed IBS symptoms I wanted a pelvic ultrasound once a year. I found after 10 years I had to visit a new doctor in order to get a doctor’s order for a ultrasound.

Had I known the future I may have popped for the surgery. Also if my growth had not been stable I would have proceeded with surgery ASAP without any delay.

I wish you good luck. I worked with a young women who did have a malignancy & she did just fine following her surgery, so please don’t loose faith.
