PCOS and my first Dietician visit

I am good about what I eat and drink each week but as nothing seems to be working…..decided there was no harm in going to see someone who can look at what I am eating and make recommendations on improvements. So 2 weeks ago I went to see a Dietician who specializes in PCOS. I I was a little anxious as the gynecologist I saw, although medically sound, was cold and lacked any sort of bedside manner. I sat in the corridor feeling unsure how knowledgeable she might be, what she was going to say about my diet, and what the next steps might be. I do not do well with uncertainty, so these first sessions always make my mind race!

When I walked I was very quickly put at ease. This woman was warm, soft spoken and kind. She let me talk through what I have discovered so far, she spoke to me about different types of PCOS which I wasn’t aware of before, and she had gone as far as creating and laminating her own chart to help explain some of the elements a little easier for people. You could tell this was a subject she cared about, even made some very open comments that if PCOS was a man’s condition we would know the cause and have a solution! I liked her more immediately for that #girlpower.

I know I have said this over and over in my posts, but I feel I am eating really healthy and I track everything so I can see if I take in too many carbs or too little protein or just lack any balance. I have my weeks down to a tee at this point and its rare I would have more than 2/3 units of alcohol in a week….unless of course I am back home for a holiday! But no matter how much I felt I was doing the right thing, there is nothing more satisfying being told that I could do with adding a few more calories into my days. WHO EVER GETS TOLD THAT?????? I was shocked, she said I was really sitting at the minimum I should be having and I could add in a little more to my breakfasts and snacks. That is a win to me!

Then we moved on to what supplements I am taking which was very easy….none. I always see fellow cysters talking about supplements, but I never knew what to take or why and my GP is the first to admit that she isn’t that well versed when it comes to PCOS. So now I am on omega-3 supplement (DHA + EPA) alongside 400IU colecalciferol (Vitamin D3..I had to google it!). These are both said to have an impact on my insulin resistance.

Final thing which I found super interesting was the conversation we had around my sleep patterns. I know sleep is important and it is SUPER important with PCOS to be sleeping enough but I have just never slept that well or that long growing up so she asked me to go back to my GP and ask to have a sleep study done. HOW BIZZARE!

Been a pretty successful few weeks of visits to my doctors. With my 3kg weight loss and supplements and diet getting under control……I am feeling one hundred times better than where I was back in March. I feel more empowered, more confident that I can get this under control and just happier in myself that, not only do I have an answer, but I am starting to get to grips with what I need to be doing.

This will always be a battle for me, as with anyone with PCOS…..but you have to take the victories as they come.
