Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone on here was misdiagnose., I’m 23, with 0 symptoms of PCOS other then the fact this period cycle has been 56 days. I had a blood test and was told my results were ‘in comparison’ to PCOS. I’m absolutely terrified that this is going to mean I’ll struggle to have kids. Any help/ advice to make me feel better would be great !

Hi! I didn’t have any symptoms until I started trying to conceive, sometimes that happens. A lot of people with pcos have children not problem, others (like me) struggle to conceive. There is plenty of help out there, the nhs in my area have been brilliant. So try not to worry. You never know but knowing you have pcos is half the battle (it took a year before I got the diagnosis) x

I know 2 other people who have an official PCOS diagnosis. One for pregnant by accident, one got pregnant after a very short course of metformin and I got pregnant after taking Clomid (And I had other issues with May have delayed conceiving).

It's most definitely does not mean that you can't have children And an early diagnosis puts you in a good position to prepare when planning to have children And to seek help if it's looking like you need some - in fact I'd argue far better than someone who is struggling to conceive who is believed to have no issues. So don't panic 😁

I'd suggest you look in the forum about eating the right diet for PCOS.

It's a syndrome. People don't get the same symptoms at the same time. Lab results for PCOS are the best way of figuring it out. I had none of the "marker" symptoms until I was 24-25. PCOS starts out as the imbalance of hormones and worsens as the weight gain symptom gets rolling. I knew something was wrong because after 11 years of regular, solid, military like precision of periods I suddenly went 6 months without one. I was told that was "normal" for women who hadn't had a baby (which is ridiculous becaise I knew my body and had 10 years of data to back me up) but it wasn't until I started facial hair they finally relented it might be something else. If you discovered it now that's one in your favor because you may not develop the other symptoms if you start managing it.

My specialist said that as long as you’re properly dealing with the symptoms through medication, exercise and diet then you have as much chance of conceiving as the rest of the population. So if you do have problems it’s probably not the PCOS causing them or you still have insulin resistance or too many male hormones or something. I want to be having kids in the next 2-4 years so I’m just trying to look after myself now and then focus on that later.

I would ask to have an ultrasound to confirm whether it's PCOS or not

in reply tohazeypops

Actually that wouldn't confirm. You can have the syndrome without actually having cysts. You need two out of three criteria and some women haven't had progression enough to develop cysts.

See here:

Table 1. Diagnostic criteria for Rotterdam diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome

Two of the following three criteria are required:

oligo/anovulation

hyperandrogenism

clinical (hirsutism or less commonly male pattern alopecia) or

biochemical (raised FAI or free testosterone)

polycystic ovaries on ultrasound

Other aetiologies must be excluded such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, androgen secreting tumours, Cushing syndrome, thyroid dysfunction and hyperprolactinaemia
