Hi, I have recently been diagnosed with poly cystic ovaries, this diagnosis only coming from a scan following a miscarriage.
My GP has said that I can not get any help with fertility until we have being trying for two years! But yet NHS websites says seek help after a year, which is what I am up to. Does any one have any experience of getting additional help before two years or is that the norm? Thank you.

Hi there! Sorry to hear of your miscarriage. I think it might depend on your ability to get pregnant. I was referred to fertility after one year but I have never been pregnant and my partner had never fathered a child. I got referred to fertility because my periods were irregular and the gyno referred me. So maybe if you have problems that way it’s worth a try? X
Yeah same situation as us, I have never been pregnant and was referred after a year of trying. Guidelines might be different depending on where you live, but you could try asking the gp again.
You need to go back to the GP and push for it, they will fob off if they can and they do for lots of ladies. Look at the NICE guidelines on PCOS too and print it out if need be and take it to your GP.
As you have got pregnant they may deem that fertility is not required. It is a good that you got pregnant (not so good about the mc ) but that could be why they are fobbing you off as you have proved you can get pregnant naturally. How long were you trying for before you got pregnant ? Was the GP aware you had started trying ?
Hi Hols969, thank you I’ll take a look at the NICE guidelines.
I think I am beginning to come to that conclusion too. Had been trying 4 months before getting Pregnant, no the gp was only aware recently when I went get some help/support on how to proceed
You usually wont get any help for a year anyway generally (as pcos is a know fertility issue) so don't let them fob you off to the two.
I would start charting your temperature (look at the fertilityfriends website) as it is the only accurate way to find out if you are ovulating so that if you do need to be referred then that will help show them what is happening with your cycle. Also 1/3 of fertility issues are now men so I would get your partner on the Boots Vit C and zinc tablets as my hubbies improved by over 100% in a year, so it cant help to give them a boost. My hubbie had lots of dead and two tailed sperm even though he was fit and healthy with a good diet and didnt smoke and rarely drank!
Also make sure your bmi is below 30 otherwise you will not be referred. Fingers crossed you wont need it
Sorry to hear about your misscarriage. There is lots of different information out there. My GP tried to refer me to the fertility clinic after 9 month due to my irregular cycles. But they refused the referral untill I had been trying for 12 months.
So if you’ve been trying for a year I would insist that your GP refers you to the fertility clinic. You always have the right to change GPs if you feel this one isn’t helping. I was fobbed off by so many before my current GP started to help. Best of luck.
I have also recently been diagnosed however we have been referred to the fertility clinic already. The consultant advised us that normally you have to try for 1 or 3 years before referral however due to the already confirmed difficulties he could refer us straight away. Mind you it is a long waiting list for an appointment.
Hi, I have been trying to conceive for a year, my gp referred me to fertility specialist who have diagnosed me with pcso. I already have a 7yr old with same partner. I have been referred for an X-ray of my tubes and then was told I will be given clomid. NHS will not fund IVF for me as I have child.
