Hello everyone.

I’m recently diagnosed with PCOS. I’m 21 years old, I also have Hashimoto’s and panic disorder for which I’m taking Levothyroxine and Seroxat/Paroxetine.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice for treating PCOS, does any diet/medicine/way of living that helps with balancing hormones and symptoms of PCOS?

I have regular periods and I think I have ovulation almost every month. My doctor wanted me to take contraception pills but I couldn’t because my mom had two Deep Vein Trombosis, so it would be risky.

Hi Masa

I am really sorry about all you have been through lately and the terrible things that have happened to your family. I have been very busy with the committee work I do in London.

I will have time to do a proper reply tomorrow.

Diet is key so stick to a low GI diet - the combined contraceptive is great so is a shame you cannot take it. One thing to remember is that a period does not mean you are ovulating and you can ovulate without one too.

The best diet I did was the theanswertopcos diet as I lost weight on it but lots of ladies have conceive naturally after doing it and others have said it has reduced their symptoms significantly.

Hello, and thank you on info. Could you please send me the link where I can read about the diet or tell me some guidelines?

Unfortunately there aren’t really any clear guidelines as far as I know! It’s unfortunate you can’t take the combined pill as it is a frequently given medication for PCOS but others are available dependent on what aspects you are treating (hair growth, acne etc)(Drugs such as spironolactone or metformin).

Dieting as mentioned is also very important and many books exist about this, especially if you are overweight as a well experienced endocrinologist I’ve been reading about spoke of the vast improvement in his patients following loss of 10% body fat.
