Hi deniseann
I'm in the same boat (except my WG diagnosis is still tentative. They think it is localised WG but they also think I may have lupus and a couple of other oddities. In any event I definitely have type 2 diabetes (diagnosed a month ago) and am initially treating by diet. A couple of observations: on a couple of the forums other sufferers have told me their glucose levels dropped to normal when they eventually got off prednisolone. My dosage is coming down (10mg a day currently) and over the last couple of weeks my glucose readings have much improved. May be the new diet (although most of the food is the same as we ate previously) or it may be the reducing pred?! Second tip is that the diabetes uk website has some great recipes! Last tip is I insisted on my GP giving me a testing kit. Many surgeries say its unnecessary for type 2 but my argument was asking someone to manage their blood sugar by diet but only testing change every 3 months is the equivalent of asking you to drive within the speed limit for three months without a speedometer. Also I argued that having the pre-existing vasculitis made managing my blood sugar more critical. They agreed. But even if they dont you can pick a kit up on ebay for £15 and as long as you dont get obsessive I think it helps you feel like you've regained a bit of control over your condition. Good luck.
Thank you .Ive been on Diabetes Uk and registered with them, plus ordered a book the diabetic nurse advised.Carbs Fals Protein Fats by Chris Cheyette.I think my main problem is portion size .After been on high dose of preds on and of for the last four years. On occassions eating everything in site
On the good news side I weighed ,alot less than I thought !!!
You must lend me your scales!
Although my blood sugar readings are getting better, my weight isn't
Despite the reduced portion sizes (and I'm generally getting used to them) every day I look more like the proverbial beach ball, and the waistband of my trousers keep shrinking. Hey ho.
Keep smiling.
Hi, you can manage this! I have had w/g for 9 years and diabetes for the last 2 years. I also have lung, kidney and bowel problems. I didn't do very well on tablets as the kidneys meant there wasn't a lot I could take and I ended up on insulin. I was dreading it but it's been so easy and I feel much better. I still eat things I shouldn't but less of them, less often! After a while it just becomes part of your daily routine. Don't be afraid of it. Keep well, Christine x
