Does My Mom stay incompasated?
In my case, having been diagnosed with Churg Straus, l lost the ability to hold items in my hands due to the nerve damage causing muscle loss, which has also affected all my muscles. My consultant advised it would take about 2 years for any damaged nerves to repair themselves but not all would. To help improve as much as possible the physio dept gave me exercises to do using a type of plasticine of varied strengths which l had to manipulate with my fingers. And for my arms and legs l had lengths of thin rubber strips of varied strength. Both plasticine and rubber strips were colour coded. In addition l was encouraged to walk as much as possible. Now, 11 years later l still have nerve damage and using my hands l can grip well but not with my fingers, hence l’m not able to hold items as l used to. Though the Churg Straus induced a stroke (left side) 3 days after diagnosis l was determined to walk despite more nerve damage. I’m unable to walk properly owing to the nerve damage being different for each leg, but manage very well.
The level of nerve damage, in my opinion, depends on whether it is an early or late diagnosis (l was 68 and late), fitness level, any other underlying illness, and age which may determine the body’s ability to heal well.
Stay safe, Derek
