Nasty taste in the mouth: Hy Guys I wondering... - Vasculitis UK
Nasty taste in the mouth
Sadly it could be the side effects of the Cyclophosphamide or the GPA, it should improve... have you mentioned it to your doctor?
John suffered with this in the early days of his diagnosis and treatment but it did improve
Hi - so sorry you are experiencing this miserable symptom. I suffered from this constantly for about 5 years. I first blamed Methotrexate, then GERD, then PPIs and finally my very neurological version of Sjögren's.
I have seen it off at last but not sure if this simple remedy would help you too - but just in case it does here goes; I am on Mycophenolate Mofetil and Ranitidine twice daily. I'm not sure which one has helped with this foul taste because I started them simultaneously five months ago but it has broadly gone. I think it was the Ranitidine that helped mine once I started taking it twice a day with my MMF.
It did return recently with a nasty spell of sinusitis but wasn't as severe and has gone again now. My sense of smell and taste have gone away with it unfortunately but I can live with this.
Of course in my case it could relate to Sjögren's with secondary Raynauds - which affect my mouth a lot because dryness causing parasthesia and swallowing issues - extreme temperatures make it worse hence my mentioning the Raynauds. Also my severe GI problems could be responsible, although these have continued despite the horrid taste going away so I think more likely to be longstabdhvf salivary gland damage and sinus issues for me.
But perhaps worth trying max dose of Ranitidine if you aren't already? 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
I don't know if this would help , but pineapple is ment to help cleanse the mouth . Another suggestion maybe gargling with warm water and cider vinegar. I do hope you find something that makes a difference, best wishes 🌸
I found the easiest way I could cope with this, combined with the sickness I had, was to settle on a fizzy drink I liked - in my case sugar free lemon & lime fizzy drink - and drink that. It freshened me up a bit, made me feel a bit more human, and also helped a bit with nausea.
But yes, do mention it to the doctors. They may have more advice about how to help.
If it's from the Cyclophosphamide it should ease after some time after that finishes.
Good luck!
Many thanks guys for getting back to me regarding my nasty mouth taste. I scrub my tongue and had bottle of good quality ginger beer and I am please to say , although the taste is still with me it is a lot better then it was. Thank goodness. My best wishes to you all Lorraine
I noticed that I had a metallic taste in my mouth. During the infusion treatments I used to eat snacks and drink Sprite and that's when I noticed I would have a metallic taste for that week and two weeks later. So I decided to stop and not eat or drink anything during my infusion Cytoxan and I haven't had anymore problems. You could try eating your food using plastic ware instead of silverware. I found that sour candies help with the aftertaste. I also rinse with Biotene which does not have alcohol and is made for individuals with dry mouth and mouth sores. It's gentle and helped tremendously. Hope this helps.
