On zopiclone for sleep and no antidepressants

Trazedone mirtazapine St John’s wort saffron 5 htp all cause tinnitus with me

Any other suggestions? It will have to be one that doesn’t put serotonin levels up & targets dopamine on noradrenaline

Bupropion?

melge, just because these medications cause YOU tinnitus doesn’t mean that they cause tinnitus for anyone else. I suspect that if you were to read the pack inserts for many drugs they say ‘can exacerbate tinnitus’ or similar.

Anxiety itself may well make tinnitus worse.

Your requirements are very specific so if you aren’t getting anywhere with your doctor, your pharmacist might be able to suggest something.

Or you could call the experts on tinnitus, the British Tinnitus Association, open 9 to 5 M to F. They have a webchat during these hours too.

Hi. Ive had noise induced Tinnitus 14 years and found Mirtazapine safest in my experience and honest opinion for anxiety. Mirtazapine can help with sleep too so you wouldnt need any other sleeping meds hopefully which maybe harmful to hearing too, who knows hey. Tbh living with Tinnitus is a bloody minefield, much more for me now as im at the severe, unmaskable life changing stage now. Look after your T best you can, out of everything having covid (twice) has had the worst effect on mine, my hyperacusis and my hearing in all my years. I wish you well.

hi there, I saw a post of yours mentioning that mirtazapine caused your tinnitus to worsen. It did the same to me. I only took 1 x15mg dose and still have the much louder tinnitus 2 years later. I just wondered if you’d had any improvement over time? Also you mentioned that you can take zopiclone. I took this for a week (prior to the mirtazapine) when I first got tinnitus and had no worsening. I’m on no sleep meds now and two years later my sleep is still horrendous and get an average of only 4 hours every night. The sleep loss is affecting me even more than the tinnitus. Can I ask what other medication you’ve found didn’t worsen your tinnitus? I’m tempted to go back to my gp and ask for zopiclone but worried about making tinnitus worse. Since taking the mirtazapine my ears are so much more sensitive so it may be that I can no longer handle zopiclone… I’d be interested to hear your experience. Thanks

Hi Polly

Most of the anti depressants I’ve tried - sertraline mirtazapine make my tinnitus worse as they increase serotonin which is an exitoratory neurotransmitter. Prozac & venlafaxine were better.

Zopiclone and benzodiazepines are sedating so don’t cause T.

The sleeping tablet Phenegan (promethazane) does - it messed my tinnitus up more than sertraline did. I think it was the main culprit.

My T is gradually getting better. Still use hearing aids a couple of hours a day to keep it at bay.

I think you gradually get used to it but it’s not easy as I’m sensitive & quiet by nature and like silence.

Try mindfulness meditation for sleep. It’s a vicious circle otherwise. UCLA have a free app.

Try herbal alternatives before prescription sleep meds like valerian, lavender etc. I’m addicted to zopiclone and tapering off still. Wished I hadn’t touched prescription meds period. Difficult when you’re in crisis though and can’t sleep.

Hope things pick up for you

Alastair
