i am on Antidepressants but they are worsening my tinnitus- it’s unbearable. Have tried various ADs and now trying Prozac but it just as bad. Anyone find this happened to them? What to do?

- yes - its best to avoid avoid AD's if poss - there are some natural supplements u could try like L-theanine and 5HTP. (the ones without additives ) How long have u been taking the AD's , would u need to taper off these first?

It’s only beenna couple of weeks on a low dose. I feel like just stopping. Can’t stand the tinnitus

can i ask how long u have had Tinnitus - the early months are the most difficult. I have read that for some people the SSRI type AD's can increase the T perception

My T is severe as well and i have had it for one year - but I really wanted to avoid the AD's , even though I have had some really difficult depressing and anxious times over the past yr. I have read a lot about natural supplements and also some people on this forum recommend certain ones - I am taking L theanine (not every day) when my anxiety and T is increased and it does work for me

I find it actually reduces my T intensity as well - I am not taking it every day though

make sure its a brand without additives and fillers etc :

the Redwells L theanine on Amazon

the Redwells L theanine powder is good as u can just take small amount to start with , then adjust this to whichever amount suits you

yes T is very very difficult - but acceptance of the T is part of the journey, and changing our reaction to it - the OTO app (£20 per month) s very good for CBT and other therapies - specifically for tinnitus

Dear Nanima, My experience with prozac has been excellent, so maybe this will cheers you up a bit 😻, in any case I took prozac for major depression and not for tinnitus but I must say that I was feeling so great that I’ve decided to not be threatened by T. Now, Maybe Mr T will be with you for your entire life or maybe NOT 🙏…Prozac or any other antidepressant will not cure it but you can let yourself go and let the medicine speak. A big hug full of hope, Laurel

you could try St John’s wort, it’s for mild anxiety and depression. But it does interact with lots of other medications, so you would need to check that first. It’s very highly rated.

in reply toPhilip6

what dose of st john’s wort to use?

The ones I have are 370mg, one tablet a day.

Antidepressants caused my Tinnitus 6 years ago (Sertraline) it took a long time for Doctors to admit it was a side effect and it was not mentioned in the leaflet, now it is written as a side effect. I cut them down and stopped taking them as quickly as possible, I still have Tinnitus. 😥 ask your Doctor about tricyclic antidepressants, it's seems to be SSRI's that are the worst culprits.

anything that put my serotonin up even St John’s wort or saffron makes my T worse unfortunately

Catch 22 take meds feel better then a lot worse from T

Tried sertraline mirtazapine trazedone SJW saffron 5htp tryptophan

Not drinking so much helps & olive oil in my ears

Zopiclone helps but I’m now dependent on that

Prayer/mindfulness apps help before bed 😊

I feel your pain. It is a nightmare of great magnitude which sadly has no cure. My only positive is that Zopiclone 7.5 mg combined with Amitriptyline 10 mg taken twenty minutes prior to sleeping is now giving me a good seven to eight hours of undisturbed sleep which is something as when I wasn’t sleeping which was often the next morning my Tinnitus would be far worse than the norm. It’s always there to greet me when I awake but I do feel refreshed from having a good nights sleep. Something which was only possible when I was drinking a bottle of wine each night along with 50 mg of diphenhydramine ‘Nytol’ The reason why my doctor finally gave in to put me on repeat prescription.

Hello Nanima i took Trezodone last year when anxiety took hold of me and i did not know that Trazodone was makeing it worse it all most sent me insane i went off twice to kill my self the feeling of hopelessness and suicide was overwhelming i could not sit down for more than a few seconds had to have all the outside doors open could not concentrate on any thing i thought i was going mad i came of Trezodone and went on to Mirtazapine and what a transformation with in a couple of days i felt normal again i was on Mertazpine for about 7 months and have been ok sinse. Trezodone also made my T much worse where as Mertazpine made it slightly quieter the only thing that Mertazapine did make worse was my restless leg syndrome . All drugs have different effects on people if possible avoid all drugs.

I have taken Mirtizapine for one year now & it’s has definitely helped me cope with the anxiety surrounding my T , my GP did some research before prescribing me these & can say it has definitely not made the T any worse. I take them at night & they help me sleep which is a god send with this condition.

Hello! I had very loud T for years, with extremely crazy spikes with suicidal thoughts! I began to search frantically on the web because science does not give me any answer.

If you TRY ALL of this, I'm sure in two or three month you’ll be much better!!

1.- Mother tincture of Passinflower plant at night, but you don,t have to take medicine for sleep!

2.- Magnesium L-Threonate (only this Magnesium works well with T.) in the morning and five hours before sleep.

3.- GABA with Gingko Biloba and L-Theanine before breakfast.

4.- Control your blood pressure and detects if you snore or have cervical problems.

5.- Protect your inner ear all the time you can!

Keep in touch and best wishes!!

Anti-depressants are often helpful for low mood and anxiety based difficulties - they're not a catch-all treatment for issues like tinnitus which can accompany tinnitus or be rendered more noticeable when our mood is continually low.

I would suggest, with my BTA hat on, that forum members be very careful about using supplements unless you are very sure that the ingredients don't counter-indicate with any other medications that you are taking.

Talking therapies are particularly helpful for a lot of people who find themselves distressed or frustrated by tinnitus and can be accessed online and offline these days.

Similarly, if you find a platform like the forum helpful, our online and in-person support groups may be worth considering - tinnitus.org.uk/find-a-supp...
