Mometasone Furoate for ETD (causing Tinnitus?)

I have been using Mometasone Furoate to treat my Eustachian tube dysfunction. Once in the morning 1 spray up each nostril and once in the evening again 1 spray up each nostril. Chewing gum and sucking sweets also I can sometimes get a lot of brown bits to come out of my tubes which I spit out into the sink and my T subsides and sometimes changes pitch. Been doing this for 5 weeks now some good days some bad, but I don’t seem to be moving forward with getting rid of the ETD. Had anyone else had a similar experience?. Getting worried that using a steroid spray for a long period may not be a good thing to do.

You haven't had a reply so perhaps no-on on this forum has your particular problem therefore hasn't found a useful remark to make! So my suggestion is maybe have a chat with your pharmacist?

I have also dysfunction of the eustacian tube. I cannot pop my ears and I have a terribly tinnitus. Every morning I can hear mucus in the tubes and it feels as it is caught in the tubes. I use neti pot and the Eustachi device, every morning, this helps a little bit as I now can pop my ears.Gives a relief , but only for a few seconds. Unfortunately it has not helped with tinnitus.

I use Avamys which is a steroid spray, ENT has told me that it is ok to use it in the long run. But I take breaks now and again.

Can you pop your ears ?

I have had limited success popping my ears. Though I think it starts to move the gunk through my tubes so I can spit stuff out after chewing gum and sucking sweets. What is this Eustachian device ?. How long have you been suffering with ETD ? I have been trying to settle these tubes down for 5 weeks now. Thank for replying

I got tinnitus after having had my ears syringed at an ENT doctor, it is 6 years ago. I had a throat infection at the same time. After the syringe, and a lot of earvax came out, I developed an Inner Ear infection with a lot of earpain and here the tinnitus started.🥺

I have not been exposed to loud noises, have not had any troubles with my ears before the tinnitus started.

The ENT should have sent me home, telling me to come back after my throat infection had cleared up again. She did not ! That was a great mistake. Had I not got the Inner Ear middle infection, I am sure I would not have this terribly noise 24/7.

Eustachi is a device which can inflate , blow up air in your nostrils , one at a time, while you swallow water at the same time. It helps me to pop my ears , but only for a few seconds, but great seconds though.😊 You can buy it at Amazon.

I think you will have a chance of recovery , as you are able to spit stuff out.

My EDT has gotten worse. After having had 3 covid vaccinations and a covid infection, in February, 22, it worsened.

Hope the best for you.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry to here about the syringing mistake. My own experience started in late Jan this year when I was suffering with a bad chest infection. I slowly started with tinnitus in Feb which I mitigated with a bit of rain noise at night for sleeping but it steadily got worse and it was only after 3 nights of not sleeping that I yawned and my ears popped and the T changed it’s volume and pitch which started me on the Eustachian tube thread. I also had Covid in Feb this year and thought things with the T got worse but it might have been my mind playing tricks. Using the steroid spray helps the gunk to come out so will continue on this path until the spray runs out. Might try the ear popping device you mentioned. Hope things improve for you all the best.

Hello there. I have just stumbled across your post after searching Mometasone nasal spray. I was told I also had ETD and basically I have no idea if this ever goes away. It seems to get worse and then calm down a bit sometimes but never actually ever goes. I get pressure headaches mainly at the front of my head and my ears ring, well make a shhhhhhhhhhh noise all the time and this gets louder when I am ill or just not feeling good.

Do you have any symptoms like this? What do you do for it .

Sorry to bother you.

Hi Sunflower022

As you can see it’s coming up to my 2 year anniversary with this condition. I feel it’s slowly getting better. I did use the Mometasone spray in those early months and then I move to a stronger spray Flixonase which I also used for several months. I did stop using them as I started to get nose bleeds and they didn’t seem to be having great effect. This condition seems to come in different flavours and different causes. Mine was due to a bad chest infection plus I also had Covid at the same time which didn’t help. If you feel your experience is similar then my long term advice is to buy a facial steamer and start to inhale steam. This was the best thing I started. Breath in through the nose and out with the mouth 10 mins at a time Morning and night and when ever you feel gunked up. If your on Facebook there is a forum/ group that has a lot of advice and experience. Best of luck hope you start to get to grips with what works for you.

Hello Squarkyboy

Sorry for the delay!

I have also just been ill with covid and it then went to my chest as I have asthma! It has wiped me right out and my ears are just awful still and not going down in the loudness!

No I don't think the nasal spray is working for me to be honest. I haven't been offered the Flixonase. Its a shame these things don't actually work.

Okay I will get one of those and try to see if it helps. I am willing to try anything to be honest.

I have one of those little cup steamers that you pop hot water in and just but the face thing on the top of it. Do you think that would work? Or do you mean the ones that plugs into the mains?

Do you find the steam helps with the tinnitus at all?

What is the forum called on the Facebook group?

Thanks so much for your reply and help!!

Hi Sunflower022

Yes my steamer is one you plug into the mains. I bought it from Argos in the UK Stylpro 4. My tinnitus is directly associated with the gunk in the Eustachian tubes. When I clear the gunk out the tinnitus subsides, problem is they keep making the gunk. So it’s a daily battle. The Facebook group is called Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Sufferers. Hope that helps. It’s awful at the beginning but things are slowly getting better for me, so don’t loose hope. Steam chew gum drink warm tea and learn to suck out the gunk from your tubes. Best of luck

Hiya,

Thanks so much for your reply:)

Excellent thank you I will get one of those!

Okay I see, it does sound like you got it under some control which is nice to hear. I wonder why it keeps making so much gunk constantly.

Thank you for the group name too.

Have do you suck the gunk out? I don't have the gunk problem, well I might have but I'm not aware!

I don't really chew gum but I probably will start now . 😅

All the best

Hi Sunflower022

For sucking out your tubes it’s like sucking a boiled sweet, suck your cheeks in. If your tubes are clogged it won’t happen at first but if you steam regularly have warm drinks and hold some in your mouth to warm the Eustachian tube exit into your throat. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction that’s why it’s called that your tubes are upset and constantly make mucus. It’s like people who have dry eyes or watering eyes the tear ducts are not working correctly making too much or not enough tears. Hope things start to work out for you good luck

Hey Squarkyboy,

Oh okay that is interesting as I feel that doesn't help but the doctors and hospital said I had ETD. But clogged tubes like that I just haven't been aware of. It's mainly tinnitus that flares up and down, my head feels like its going to explode, the headaches are awful. Like very pressured and happens all the time basically everyday. The tinnitus doesn't go it just gets louder at times but at the moment mainly loud. I am being to think if ETD is even right.

You have definitely explained it better. So Thank you so much for your help. I hope they do for you too!
