Vitamin D causing tinnitus

Hi,

I posted a little while back about vitamin D supplements causing tinnitus, well it turns out its not just supplements. I've been in the sun on a few occasions over the last couple of months and it affects my tinnitus in the same way. What the hell do I do?

This has only started since I had radio active iodine to ablat my thyroid and now on levothyroxine. My magnesium and potassium levels are high which I'm guessing is because of the meds. I just don't know what to do, I can't live like this forever 😪 gonna try go back to the drs, but can't imagine they will be very helpful. I can't find anything on the Internet about the actual sun causing tinnitus just supplements.

I’m sorry to read how your suffering with tinnitus in the sun. I doubt if it’s the brightness of the sun , it must be the “ heat” of the sun. So,, what actually happens if and when you sit in front of a hot fire? Could it be therefore the heat of the sun that’s affecting you. You could perhaps research any other conditions that might arise from the sunshine. Sunshine is very good for us as a rule , providing we use some sunscreen if possible.

The tinnitus comes from my vitamin d levels rising. It happens with supplements, sun beds and from the sun. I've tried every way I can think of to increase them. All I can think is that my rising vitamin d levels must be reacting with some other level in my body ??

I think then you must find a specialist to deal with this difficult and complicated issue. I do hope you return to normal soon. Maybe others on here will have some ideas ?

Hi Hookie01 - I've experienced a similar problem and have stopped taking Vitamin D supplements due to this. It's concerning because low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to cognitive problems and dementia, but once I stopped taking the supplement - against the advice of friends who advised me this would be detrimental to my health - the levels of buzzing definitely improved. It's a conundrum because, as I understand it, in most cases Vitamin D is beneficial to people suffering from tinnitus, and it's really important for so many aspects of the body, especially the brain.

It's awful isn't it. Do you know if the sun does the same to you? I've tried to just dose low on vit supplements but now the sun is pit its hard to avoid it and quite frankly I want to enjoy the sun. Been looking forward to summer for so long and now I'm miserable 😩

With me it's just the supplement but - and I am only going by my own experience - tinnitus reacts to discomfort, e.g. very cold and very hot weather. That might be something to do with it rather than the sun per se. You definitely need to speak to a doctor about this as the additional stress it's causing must be making your tinnitus worse.

It was only 14 degrees and I was actually laying on the chair with my cardigan on, who knows what causes it. Dr won't do anything, I will have Togo private if i want to investigate it further.

Factor 50 sunblock? Hearing aid with music/white noise of your choice. I have waves.

I like the waves, can't get on with white noise etc, sends me crazy lol. Looks like I need to invest in sun cream then 🙄 thank you.

Hi Hookie01 I can imagine it's very frustrating for you and - as you say - way beyond the remit of the average GP. I wonder if there might be a specialist out there who can help you. I wish you all the best.

Yes, I think I may have to look for a specialist, I have a drs appointment today so will ask if he can either refer me or point me in the right direction.

Whilst I’ve nothing extra to offer you, Hookie01, other than the very valid points made by other forumites I’ve two little thoughts.

The first is that a dietician or a pharmacist might (and only “might”) have some answers.

The other is the “usual” way to deal with tinnitus, ignoring the vitamin issue. If you haven’t been through it lately, you might want to re-read the British Tinnitus Association Website’s Take on Tinnitus” which is a sort of training aid to help you deal with this horrid condition.

Hi! I’ve been suffering from T for many years. It got worse about 5 years ago.As for me, I haven’t noticed any link between D3 supplements or exposure to sun. On the contrary, in my case, T gets worse on rainy days.

Maybe, in your case, it’s medication or blood pressure rising on very sunny days.

Yes, I have wondered if vit d could raise blood pressure,meds or another level in my body or something. Maybe TSH level etc. I may get to the bottom of it one day. I don't give up easily lol

Tinnitus is common if thyroid levels are inadequate. Mine started when my thyroid packed up, improved when levothyroxine was increased but has never gone away entirely as damage was done when I was undiagnosed.!Have you asked the ThyroidUK forum? There are quite a few posts about tinnitus on there and people who know a lot about thyroids and supplements.

I started becoming sun sensitive around 7 years ago, I also developed tinnitus around this time & had balance & other issues, turned out I have b12 deficiency....I was also folate & D deficient. My tinnitus has become much quieter over time with my b12/folate/D treatment but I am still sun/heat sensitive. I have found keeping a sunhat on to keep my head cool helps a lot but if I allow my head to overheat my tinnitus ramps up a lot, I get what I call a 'funny head' too & my balance goes off. I'm not too bad if temps are in the low 20's but anything above puts me all wrong. It sucks for sure...x

Funnily enough, just after I had RAI all my levels (B12, ferritin, folate and Vit D were very low. Not quite deficient but not far off. Only one I had success in rasing was B12. I'm now going to work on the others and hope it helps, even just a little would be good. Thank you very much.

My b12, at 216, was just above the deficient scale & I had to fight to get symptom based treatment... I joined a b12 group who were/are a brilliant support. Most doctors just look at numbers and deem you are ok & refuse b12 treatment...but are only too happy to offer antidepressants! I was practically housebound for nearly a year... couldn't function. I kept a symptoms diary & along with what I learned in the b12 group I got the correct treatment in the end but it was an uphill struggle.If your b12 is at the low end & you have neurological symptoms, of which tinnitus can be one, pills will raise your levels but will not address/correct these symptoms...injections are needed for this.

Hi Hookie, Look and see what else is in the Vitamin D supplement and sometimes the fillers can cause it? Are you taking vitamin D with K because this is very important. Taking Vitamin D3 with Vitamin K2 helps to ensure the calcium transported by the Vitamin D is absorbed by your bones where it's needed, rather than accumulating in deposits in your arteries. The sun tends to help with tinnitus, another theory could be if you get over heated/hormones maybe that could cause it? Or are you really stressed? is the sun/heat relaxing neck and shoulder muscles? some people have a hard time relaxing and this could cause more issues. 10 breaths in 8 breaths out helps. TRT training is another thing you might want to look into, it is not cheap but it has a 80% success rate. Hope this helps!

I use all natural supplements, well as natural as I can get them and yes with K2. I thought it was cos it was high dose but tried small doses as well.Stress levels have been exceptionally high over the last 3 years I will admit. But all has calmed down now, though I do have an autistic teenager, so it never completely goes lol. I will look at TRT training, Thank-you.

I think I would get yourself properly tested to check your vitamin D level, obviously this will be reduced in the winter as we are in the Northern hemisphere. I think you can send off to a for a testing at Birmingham ( hope that's the right one!) University for about £30 . My daughter did that and was pleased with the information she received.

I use a nutritionist rather than a doctor to deal with issues like this.Most of them will do Zoom consultations. Hope this might be worth a try.

I too find the same with sun....but I think that is due to heat causing inflammation and therefore heightening the tinnitus.

Personally I would see a dietician rather than a nutritionist as the title is not protected by law ( crazy!) .

I could call myself a nutritionist if I did a short internet course or just fancied calling myself one. ( I have an A level in food chemistry) where as Dietician has a three year degree qualification. Be careful how you spend your money...I prefer regulated clinical trials info rather than someone's views if I am paying...Just saying... as when you are desperate for a cure it's easy to end up paying good money just in the hope it might help.
