Hi Lifeback. It could be hyperkeratosis - thickening in response to frictional contact with the teeth. It is normal - like callouses on the hands of someone doing heavy manual work. My tongue swells a lot too and I usually get mouth ulcers on the inside of my bottom lip. Your tongue is obviously filling up the mouth cavity more than normally and this could be causing the friction in the mouth and thus the thick white line you talk about. Don't think it's anything to worry about, but check it out with your GP if your concerned.

Swollen tongue is a hypo symptom, Lifeback. It should sort itself out when you're properly medicated.

Grey is right - a swollen tongue is one of the many hypo symptoms and you may well be undertreated.

It's mucin which makes the tongue swell, you produce excesses of it if you are hypo. Do you have indentations too.. from where your teeth rest on it? Known as a pie crust tongue?

Hi lifeback,

sorry to hear you are having problems with your tongue, I have the same thing, sore throat and what feels like swollen tongue! my Endo said at my last appointment that it was not a symptom of Hypo!!

as yourself I read this sight a lot and the information I gathered from all involved they said that this could be low B12, I asked to have my B12 tested and although it was at the low end still in range,so as the doc's would not treat me for it I supplemented my self with tablets 5000 sublingal for the last 3 months.

Good news B12 up a lot and sore throat better it comes back when I'm really tired! so give it a go hope it works,Best of luck wakeham.
