When to take thyroxine? I usually take mine first thing in the morning and as it says leave some time before breakfast.

I have seen discussion on this website about taking it last thing at night. What are the benefits and risks associated with this? Can anyone help please?

Possibly the best way to answer your question is to point you at the ongoing poll we have on this. It is loaded with personal experiences. Some people find it very beneficial to take it at night. Some do not. It's very much an individual thing :)

Thanks - this is really helpful. I think I will try switching to night time. How do I manage the changeover? I took a dose this morning so what should I do tonight, tomorrow morning?

Hi Jenny, I changed about 2 months ago from taking my thyroxine in a mornings (had been doing it for 6 years that way) to evenings. I saw a specialist and he advised me to do so after I mentioned I was thinking of changing the time I was going to take my thyroxine, and asked him what he thought about it. He said he had seen documented evidence that supported medicating in an evening and thought it made sense to try it out. It is believed by some that uptake of T4 in the gut is greater at night whilst asleep and that there is less hassle with taking mik (calcium) in a mornings with breakfast - you don't have wait for your morning cuppa! Personally it works for me. I sleep better; have less anxiety issues (was waking in a panic every night - awful!); I am more energetic in a morning and less groggy. You've got to be careful of an evening however, eg., if you like a drink with milk in it of an evening you've got to leave at least 2 hours before taking your thyroxine. Bit of a hassle, but for me, if it's choosing between having my morning cuppa or one of a night-time, morning wins! Having said all that, some people have tried swapping to an evening and not benefitted by it at all. We're all different but I would say it was worth a try.

Best wishes....

Thanks. What you say sounds logical so I think I am going to give it a try. How did you go about changing the time?

I did what the specialist told me to do and that was to take another dose (had taken my thyroxine that morning) in the evening at 10pm. I questioned whether this would affect me adversely, sounded a bit like overdosing to me!, but he assured me I would be fine and I was. Hope this is useful to you Jenny. Be interested to hear about how you get on.
