I have been on thyroxine, only 25mcg for a trial period of two to three months. so far it has been 7 weeks and I have booked a blood test for next week.I had a definite improvement in most of my,admittedly not major symptoms(mild but enough for me to know its not right) after the 1st 2 weeks it was wonderful to feel so good for a 3 weeks. But since week 5 things have slid back to how it was before thyroxine started. Just wondering would this perhaps be because I need an increase for some reason or would it be that I don't need it at all, just bit confused....
Any thoughts welcome...: I have been on thyroxine... - Thyroid UK
Any thoughts welcome...
Hi Cupi, I too am on a trial but only 2 and a half weeks in, I also feel better . . . so far, early days. I hope you get some answers as I will be interested as well. I will be posting soon, to let everyone know how I am getting on.
Thanks flat feet- bit of a minefield huh? Will post how it goes later. Good luck with your trial
Hi Cupi, you need an increase. It is perfectly natural, on any dose, to feel better to begin with, but gradually have your symptoms return. That is how you know you need an increase.
Its when your symptoms don't return that you know you're on the right dose for you.
But, 25 mcg is only a teeny weeny starter dose. It would be amazing if you didn't need an increase.
Hugs, Grey
50mcg is a starting dose and this is a link and cursor to November 28, 2003 just for info. I know you are on a trial but 25mcg is so negligible and it should have been increased by 25mcg at least about 4 weeks later. GP's are apt to stop increasing when your TSH is a certain level so keep an eye on things yourself and also get a print-out of your thyroid gland blood test results for your own records or to post here if you have a query.
Thank you both grey goose and shaws for the helpful info, it very helpful and I will try to get the optimal dose after blood test next week thanks again
It's likely that you felt an initial benefit as the 25mcg of thyroxine was additonal to what you made naturally. After a few weeks though, the additional thyroxine you were taking would have suppressed your TSH a bit, and your body started making less of it's own T4, so symptoms started returning. At this point you need to up the dose. The same thing is likely to happen until you end up taking more than is offset by the reduction of your own thyroid. As GG said, you will know when you get to this point, as your symptoms won't come back, unfortunately though, your GP is likely to be more focused on TSH than symptoms. xx
Remaining on too low of a dose for too long is not a good thing so try to get your GP to allow you to raise the dose any time your symptoms start to return as Clare explained until you get to a dose that keeps the symptoms away.
