Iron levels and testing

Hi all

Just wondering what blood tests I should ask my gp for to test my iron levels? I had iron checked last year and I was low but in range. I've been supplements with iron in some form or another for about 8 months now. Time to re check don't you think?

But what tests?

Cheers in advance

Si

Thanks ND. What's an iron study? Will my gp know of that?' Lol

at my hospital this test is called 'Iron and Iron Binding Levels', though I would imagine any doctor knows it by this and 'iron studies' name.

It will give you:

Iron Level, transferritin saturation, and total iron binding capacity.

And this test will be enough to tell me what I need to know..... Ie is low iron causing me to stay ill ?

no it will not tell you that, it will only tell you if you have a problem with low iron or absorbing iron

And that's enough to determine low iron being a problem for my thyroid/adrenal condition?

well, it is known that low iron is a problem for thyroid sufferers, however once your iron level is fixed I don't know if you will be well, we'll see...I hope so :)

That's why you're the sites Clever Clogs lol

My reply to that page was, yeah but how do you sort out those 6?! I'm struggling with thyroid and adrenals so ow does one sort those to rule out the following conditions :0/

ah, but I never had an 'adrenal problem', so you see, I 'cheat' ;)

Hi

I just sneakily asked the blood nurse to add an iron test on my blood form. She ticked ferritin. Is this any good to me ND?

nobodysdriving profile image
nobodysdriving in reply tosporty333

yes ferritin is useful but it's not an 'iron and iron binding levels' much better than nothing though :)
