has anyone any tips for looseing weight with un... - Thyroid UK
has anyone any tips for looseing weight with underactive thyroid and the menopause ? I eat sensibly and heathily and go to gym 3x a week
Strangly enough, I would say eat more and excercise less! lol But it does depend so much on your hormone levels.
The point about eating is that if you don't eat enough calories, you can become more hypo because your body can't convert your hormones, and therefore you can actually diet yourself fat! Been there, done that...
Also, what do you mean by eating 'healthily'? If you mean avoiding fat and salt, then that isn't healthy, and can cause you to put on more weight.
As for excercising, when you move, you not only use up calories (and you may not have enough to begin with) you also use up your hormones - and you more than likely don't have enough of those to spare! So, you become more hypo...
But it's difficult to say without more details. However, I would definately say that when you have hormonal problems, it is NOT a question of calories in vs calories out. It's far more complicated than that. Siskin gave a very nice link recently that talked about weight and hormones. Might be worth a read.
Good luck, Grey
I joined slimming world and since last march I've lost 2st 9lb. It's been slow progress and when my thyroid meds needed upping I didn't always lose anything but I have found it good as there's loads of 'free' food so you can eat as much as you want of these. I've also found its made me feel a little better too. Haven't done much exercise though, must try!
Thank you greygoose, some interesting points there !.
Greygoose is right concerning fats, healthy fats are positive for health i.e. organic meat fat, goose fat, organic butter, coconut oil and olive oils for cold drizzling, providing these are combined with healthy protein and healthy carbs. Contrary to common belief we need a certain amount of cholesterol to keep our brains healthy, even more so as we age. It has been found that lowering cholesterol in the elderly leads to death faster.
Have you tried giving up starchy foods? I follow an insulin resistant diet and since giving up potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, wheat and sugars I have gone from a size 18 to a size 14. I bulk up my meals with more veggies, have small portion of fruit and natural yoghurt for dessert then finish off with two oatmeal crackers and small portion of organic cheese.
Hope this inspires.
Absolutely agree with you Joyia - I have been on low carb for 19 weeks had a total thyroidectomy 6 weeks ago, have lost 16lbs in that time, I started menopause at the same time as hypothyroid, put on 5 stone, I have always been normal weight up till then. Now I use coconut oil for cooking, no pasta bread etc as you say never buy anything that says 'low fat' as I think they put other rubbish in to bulk it out. You are a person after my own heart, lovely to read your information, sally x
hi Joyia. many thanks for the advice.
I am hypo and I manage to keep my weight in normal levels. What I do is:
1) Reduce salt
2) Have breakfast every day (sth with proteins, and low in fat and sugar eg. egg scramble with some turkey or chicken fillet in) and some whole grain bread
3) Have a snack before lunch (fruit, or vegs -eg. carrots, celery, cherry tomatos- or yogurt -sugar free- and almonds or walnuts-
4) Have for lunch sth not that fattening and that contain proteins
5) Snack again
6) The best dinner is boiled eggs with vegs or fruit - trust me- or alternatively you could have some lean meat with veggies
extras
-have at least 1.5 lit of water daily
-if you want sth sweet have some dried fruits (but not with added sugar-check the ingredients-) or some hot milk with honey and cinnamon or a banana
-dont add sugar to coffe or tea
-dont have large amount of food in one meal
-try to exersize at least 2 times per week (some running will do the job)

Presumably you have something to sell? How does your guarantee work then?
I would suggest that it's irresponsible to make such a claim when you have no idea of a person's medical history.
As for running, do you really think that everyone is able to do that?
Hi i was always told that the diabetic diet was best, see Diabetes uk and American equivalent. Also ,do you know there is a strong link between low Free T3 and weight?
I hope this helps, miserable for you.
Jackie
thanks Jackie anything is deffo worth ago !
Being Hypo it is a long slow mainly uphill struggle and the older you are the more difficult it is. You can Gym yourself into a frenzy and still sometimes nothing happens but as others say, lowish fat, very low if any sugar (please check ingredients it's in everything...Baked Beans....sugar...really....yes !!!!) Low carbs is really necessary as they burn off first before your own excess fat so if you eat a lot then your own fat just goes on going on! Keep up the exercise as it's good for you anyway. The thing is when you're Hypo you cant have many "occasional treats", if any. It's a strict regime but a necessary one.
Thanx phoebs
