Hi everyone, I'm hashimoto's so underactive and taking thyroxine 125m and have been on these meds for about 10years. I have terrible trouble with thick mucose and a cough with really bad spasms, almost vomit. It's driving me mad as I do some presentations in public. Dread having a bad coughing spasm while talking. Eating so many cough sweets, probably have no teeth left soon. GP says post nasal drip, given me nasal spray, not terrible effective. saw these Serrapeptase recommended on internet for just this problem. But worried about taking them in case of side effects. GP not terribly helpful thinks herbal stuff quack. Anybody any ideas?

I took serrapeptase for a time because I understood it could help break down fibrous tissue or scar tissue. I didn't feel any side effects. I did not know it affected mucous production.

Have you thought of taking guaifenasin, the main ingredient in cough syrup.

There was a certain therapy using this ingredient.

Also, this: N-Acetyl-l-Cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of the dietary amino acid l-cysteine. NAC has a high affinity for lung tissue, which it supports through mucolytic and antioxidant action. By disrupting disulfide bonds, NAC thins mucus. It is a powerful free radical scavenger and thus supports the body's na...

Thanks Heloise for that info. Because I take Ramapril 10mg for by Hypertension as well as the thyroxine, always worry if things are going to react badly. As I'm my husbands carer too have to try to stay on as top form as possible. So try to "stay calm and carry on" as far as this illness allows me too.Bless you.

And you have a lot to carry. There are websites about drug interactions but I think both that I mentioned should not cause a problem. Wishing you well.

Black Seed Oil helped get rid of my persistent cough. It is a very interesting oil, if you would like to learn more; theblessedseed.com

I purchased from this Company as their oil is 100% pure cold pressed, made to the highest standard of extra virgin oil. It is also known as the blessed seed due to it's powerful healing qualities for many ailments. Definitely worth looking into.

Hope this helps.

You might have a vitamin D deficiency. Since mine was corrected I've not had as many colds or coldsores & my body aches reduced to. Another thing that has reduced headache, dizziness & mucus has been going gluten free.

Thanks for that info, I'm thinking of going gluten free. I'm just trying lactose free this week to see if that helps and I'm drinking more water. I love a cup of tea but really struggling without the milk it tastes strange. Did your GP test for vit D level or did you just take a suppliment? Bless you

My vit D was tested but GP didn't alert me to the fact it was low. I only found after paying for a £25 blood spot home testing kit (I've done 2 since) then 6 month battle with GP to ptescribe loading dose to bring level up. I also swear by Jarrows sublingual B12.

I noticed you take Ramapril, if you have not found out already. Ramapril causes those exact side affects. Constant dry cough- mucous... change BP meds.

Tetontina made a very good recommendation to look into changing BP med. I did a search and found it is actually ramipril and there are a lot of side effects some of which could also be thought to be just bad thyroid function and so be mis attributed and if a person where to be put on continually higher meds containing T4 they would find they have increased fatigue rather than feeling better and that is because the body changes what it considers excess T4 into reverse T3. So by getting higher doses of any T4 medication the person would feel continually worse.

I feel sorry for moonlilly having to go dairy free as I also did that for a total of about 17 years and the problem is there is iodine added to milk and so my total avoiding also of table salt meant I had no source of iodine. So as I have added back milk, I have seen my reverse T3 lower by one point on its own and all I take are supplements and veggies and soup and nuts and eggs which are actually good for you and I am almost 62 with naturally blood pressure of 100/60 as I have had a life of taking supplements in a wise fashion.

I have also tried the serrapeptase and could not tell how it might have been helping, so fell away from using it even though my doctor does recommend it to people. The reason I had started it was when I fell and hit my head on a metal box in 2016 the body had started to pile a mountain of cholesterol right over where the stitches had been so I was hopeful the serrapeptase might help reduce that and my doctor said it would not be strong enough to do that as it mostly takes aways what is free floating and not what is built up, so I have now a lop sided face that is stiff on that side where I had the accident. But I have never had a problem with the build up of cholesterol in arteries as is evident with the low blood pressure and that is because I use vitamin C and E in high doses for at least 2 decades. Plus I also use vitamin D in a preparation with K2 included ass it is necessary to use VitD properly which most people miss finding out. Also people who take fake synthetic vitD2 will have about half the utilization as it is not nearly as good as D3.

But I can tell you that taking plenty of antioxidants is a wise thing to do as that is why my natural level of blood pressure is on the lower edge of normal and when my other doctor said he was told to recommend a BP meds for everyone I said NOT for me and so he took my BP again and found it was 100/60 and I said SEE, if I took any BP med I would not be able to walk as happened to me when I was put on the drug for neuropathy before I solved it as that had put my BP down to 80/50 and I could not walk or even stand in the shower to wash my hair so had to have help washing my hair in a bowl on the floor. But I solved that problem of neuropathy totally with supplements by 2003.
