What exactly should your temperature be in the morning and how fast or slow should your pulse be - when you have an under active thyroid?

'optimal' body temperature at waking should be around 36.8 (to 37)

pulse less than 100 any time of the day, at waking ideally less than 90 I would say

when you have an under active thyroid (which is not treated or under treated) many suffer from slow pulse and low body temperature, some from a high pulse.

....... What about a pulse of 60 on waking?!

that's fine, mine's that now that I am on 125mcg of T3 daily

Thanks for that info. I was wondering exactly the same thing. Mine's around 52 on waking now (up from 36-40!) so I think I'm nearly there :) Temperature is around 36.4-36.6 which isn't too bad. I think I just need that little increase in NDT.

mine's anything in between 58 and 62 at waking now

As regards temperature, if it drops in the afternoon (from 36.5 to 36.1) is that significant? I thought body temperature was supposed to rise as the day goes on but perhaps I have got confused.

yes the 'typical' normal temperature is 36.8 at waking rising slowly to 37 by early pm.

Temperatures going up and down is a typical 'adrenal' symptom

Thanks. If it continues once I'm on the right dose of NDT I will look into the adrenal test. I don't think I have major adrenal problems any more, but maybe minor ones. Thanks for you help :)

Hi Carolyn,

from what I've read, if you have adrenal issues, (or Iron) you probably won't be able to reach 'optimal' on NDT. I'm not sure if it's the same for minor issues, I'm in a similar situation myself, not started NDT yet, so hoping that minor adrenals won't stop me raising ok.

Hi Dannia. I've been ok so far. I have increased by 1/2 grain every two weeks until I got to 2 1/2 grains and then waited 4 weeks until increasing to 3 grains (today). I have had no trouble so far so I am fairly sure my adrenal problems are minor and my last iron results were pretty good. I might find I can't quite get to optimal though without getting the adrenals totally sorted so I am still working on that. Feeling much better on NDT though. It seems to be helping with everything :)

I can't wait to get started, but going to re-test everything first as it's been 3 months since my last lot including low iron/b12 and d3.

I've been on T4/T3 so I want to see what changes that has made too.

I hope you keep having positive results as it gives me hope! xx

Hi Dannia

you say that you have low iron/B12 and D3 can you tell me what your levels are? as I go to the endo shortly, it would be nice to know someone else' s levels as they say I'm in range!Mine are;

B12 is 290 range (150 -900 )

Serum ferritin 24 (11 - 307 )

Folate is high 24.8 (3.1 -19.9 )

so I wonder if your are similar.

Hi, I understand that optimal levels should be as follows:

B12 500ng/L and above, B12 non- toxic

Ferritin 90ug/L

Folate 10-12ug/L

Your pattern is same as mine was. B12 and ferritin too low, folate above range. You very likely won't get any B12 injections with this level but if you want to use sublingual B12 you can read my posts on how I raised B12 from 167 to skyhigh on this link:

Hi nostoneunturned, thank you for your reply I found it very interesting I shall join when monies are available (pensioner so will have to wait a bit sorry!) As my GP thought that the B12 was fine,I think as you say the endo will not have any sympathy for me! Considering I went for help in April last year to the GP as I could not stand the pain in my legs and the H/sweats sleepless nights!Still no help up to December I decided to take my own action on the results posted to try and get B12 up I have been taking B-Complex Holland & Barrett sublingual liguid 1ml daily now for 4 weeks I felt that I had to do something! I read on the PA site that if your Folate was high it could be masking low B12 so I went for it!! I expect that I will get my legs slapped when I see the endo as they think we know nothing don't they.Thank you for your help. Regards wakeham.

I think I seem to feel best with a temperature of 36.8 - 37.1 and a pulse of about 74. I feel uncomfortable if my pulse is over 80, atlhough this is probably still ok :) x

I think that's the thing Clarebear, we're all different and some will feel better with different numbers.

Hi

My temp never gets above 36.2, often is 35.5 to 35.8 and I feel unwell. I'm on 200mcg of t4 before was diagnosed, I could drop pulse to low 30bpm territory and have set off hospital heart attack alarms! Do watch the pulse and blood pressure as I have had some near misses and owe much to UK first responders as I live in the sticks and on two occasions to the paramedics of the Los Angeles fire dept.

What I am really confused about is that my digital thermometer says to add on .5 to the reading because it is digital. So, firstly, are your thermometers the same? And secondly, if so, have you all added on .5 or are you saying what your digital thermometer reads?

Dannia profile image

Hiya,

I use a digital thermometer, and I didn't know about adding.5, so mine is as it reads, but it's consistent as it's the same thermometer.

I'm expecting delivery of a non mercury liquid one soon (can't remember the name) so will be interested to see the difference.
