Does anyone know where I can get information on the bodies conversion of T4 to T3. My TSH and Free T4 is normal but I am still symptomatic. Also, is there any professional help/support in Scotland? Do we have a medical expert I can get in touch with? or a Support Group? or anything?

Advice re T3 Conversion and help in Scotland
Hi there Crow, sorry to hear that you are still symptomatic.
Do tell us more (if you don't mind) then someone may be able to help you further. I too am still symptomatic after being fully medicated for a couple of months. My TSH is under 1 and my Free T4 is just above the lab ref range, so although I have improved I am still patiently waiting for further improvement.
Tell us what your last blood test results were and your lab ranges. How long have you been on your current dose of medication?
Are you taking any other meds/supplements? are you taking levothyroxine, if so is it usually just one brand?
Hoping we can get you some help and support.
Hi Crow -
Me too!! I would be interested in finding out a bit more on this subject. I have been within the normal ranges in my blood for a couple of months and, although I have improved a great deal, I still have lingering symptoms. I am taking Levothyroxine.
I have had a similar problem, I did not improve significantly on synthetic thyroxin as it does not contain T3 and have to take natural Armour thyroid which contains both. The inability to convert T4 to its useable form is called Wilson's syndrome - there are plenty of articles if you Google it. I see Dr Skinner privately who is Scottish and at one time used to hold clinics throughout the UK, it may be worth contacting his office to see if he still does any work there. Tel. 0121 449 8895. If he doesn't I am sure he will know someone who does.
Hi crow,
i am a patient of Dr Skinners and he still does a clinic in Glasgow about once every 6 weeks. He is a fantastic doctor and helped me get my life back after an Endo and my Gp were going to start going down the "Fibromyalgia" route.Im not saying that Fibromyalgia isn't a condition but given that i had a goiter as well as raging hypo symptoms i thought i'd like to see if thryoid meds helped first!
You can get some great information on all aspects of thyroid disease and the alternative ways of treating it ie.adding in NDT's (natural dessicated thyroid products) which were succesfully used for over 100 years until the "superior" synthetic hormones were brought in in the 1960's which only contain T4.The NDT's have T4,T3,T2,T1 & calcitonin.

and remember "normal" is not the same as "optimal"
Hope this helps!

Ask your GP to refer you to Dr Leese at Ninewells hospital. I was referred recently and, although reluctant to put me on NDT, he HAS put me on T3, so he IS willing to listen. He has also done wonders for my wife, who has Addison's Disease. (Adrenal deficiency)
