After quite a frustrating journey through various different doctors and tests I've been told I've got slightly underactive thyroid but it's not enough to try out Thyroxine. I can't quite believe it - what are my options.

How do I get a trial of Thyroxine

Thyroid UK has a new document that will be going up onto our new website (which will be up and running soon). It gives lots of information on what to do in different situations such as checking your actual results and if you are actually outside of the TSH range but below 10, under the Thyroid Function Test Guidelines 2006, your GP can actually give a trial of levothyroxine. Watch out for the new document!
If your TSH is above the reference range (usually something like 0.5 to 5.0) but below 10, then the Guidelines state that your GP is allowed to give you a trial of thyroxine. The Guidelines are on the Thyroid UK website. Print it off, highlight the section and take it back to your GP for further discussion.
If you haven't had an FT4 test or thyroid antibody tests done, then ask your GP if he will do these for you. If not, then we suggest getting them done privately so that you can see the whole picture, not just the TSH picture.
