Low calcium: I have low calcium what supplements... - Thyroid UK
Low calcium

do you have low vitamin D
Calcium levels should improve as vitamin D levels improve
I buy Contrex mineral water and have a litre a day spaced out but well away from thyroid medication. It contains over 2/3 daily requirements and I prefer it to taking pills.
A fact I found out recently is that post menopausal women have an increased need for calcium at 1200mg per day, more than at any other time of their life including pregnancy! Don't know if this applies to you but just putting it out there x
Would you mind linking to a reference for that?
How much calcium do you really need?
Standard recommendations may be too high, and calcium supplements could harm more than help.

The conclusion from the above is:
If you can get at least 700 mg of calcium from food, that should be enough.

Thank you.
Sure makes it difficult to make decisions!
I am usually largely in agreement with ODS documents but am not convinced in this case!
No worries! Everyone must make their own choice about what's right for them especially when we can find contradictory evidence from sources we usually find reliable. ❤️I have decided to up my calcium intake from food as I am in the post menopausal category now, I understand cortisol affects calcium uptake and calcium affects the excitability of nerves and affects collagen/bone. The body will take reserves from anywhere to maintain homeostasis in the blood. This list is far from exhaustive btw, it is linked with vitamin D levels also as Slow Dragon said. Quite complicated inter relations!
I've upped dietary calcium rather than taking calcium carbonate as I read a BMJ paper about increased risk of heart attack. Milk, cheese, tahini and sardines. Also 4000iu Vit D and Vit K2 l.
